The best time to visit, depending on your interests

Love water sports?

Summer is the ideal season for you! Swimming, snorkelling, paddleboarding and canoeing are all on the agenda, alongside other water sports such as waterskiing, kitesurfing and wingfoiling. If you prefer to avoid July and August, all the better! Temperatures remain pleasantly mild on land and in the water until mid-October, allowing you to enjoy the quieter charms of the late season.

Keen on hiking?

Spring and autumn are ideal for exploring quieter coastal trails, whether on Menorca in the Balearic Islands or along the shores of Corsica and the Dalmatian islands. Sunshine is plentiful, illuminating landscapes where the blues of the Mediterranean contrast with the rich greens of the vegetation, from pine and holm oak to myrtle and other evergreen shrubs.

Passionate about history?

Spring and autumn — and, to a lesser extent, winter — are ideal seasons for exploring ancient sites and historic monuments at your own pace. Shorter queues, readily available guides and fewer visitors make for a more relaxed experience. Photographers will also appreciate the softer light, which brings the landscapes to life. If travelling in winter, however, be sure to check museum opening times and any seasonal closures before setting out.

Prefer to avoid the crowds?

The simplest advice is to avoid the height of summer! If you have no choice but to travel then, plan your visits for early morning, when temperatures are cooler, or later in the day, when the crowds begin to thin. Fortunately, the Mediterranean’s wonderfully varied coastline is dotted with secluded coves where you can swim away from prying eyes.

Curious about the local way of life?

Choose the shoulder seasons or winter. This is when you’re most likely to enjoy authentic encounters with local people going about their daily lives. Artisans, restaurateurs and winegrowers have more time to share their knowledge and expertise. Immerse yourself in the rich cultures of the Mediterranean, shaped by centuries of history.
