A way of life

Norway is the kingdom of fishing. It has shaped its landscapes and carved out its traditions for thousands of years. It is a way of life that reflects a deep attachment to the sea and the sustainable management of its resources. From villages to festivals, discover the richness of this lasting relationship between man and his environment.

The sea, the soul of Norway

Sailors’ songs Sanger om Sjøen, tastings, fishing villages… The sea is at the heart of Norwegian traditions and crafts. Fresh, dried, tanned, sanded: in Norway, fish is king. Nothing is lost, everything is transformed.

the Kraken, the mythical monster of Scandinavian tradition

The Kraken, the legendary sea monster, has haunted the imagination of sailors for centuries. Described as a colossal cephalopod that can grow up to 30 metres long, it is said to have the power to swallow ships whole. Although scientists have identified giant squid of impressive dimensions, the Kraken remains an emblematic figure, the embodiment of the unfathomable mysteries of the deep sea.

Wild harmony to the burbling of the rivers

Freshwater fishing forges an intimate connection between man and his environment. Fly fishing takes on an artistic dimension at lake Røssvatnet and in the rivers of Gudbrandsdalen. The fishermen display their skills, wielding their rods with striking elegance to attract trout, pike and salmon.

Peite île en Novège

Further south, the ponds of Hardangervidda, perched on the largest mountain plateau in northern Europe, offer a spectacular backdrop, dominated by the snow-capped peaks of Hardangerjøkulen and the ridges of Hallingskarvet. In spring, the trout swim up the fresh, vigorous currents of the rivers oxygenated by the melting ice to spawn.

Bergen market, a crossroads of flavours

The Bergen harbour market is a true pillar of local gastronomy, inviting you to savour a wide range of seafood, including smoked fish, fresh prawns, Norwegian caviar, and even whale meat. During the festive season, you can also grab yourself some of the famous lutefisk, dried fish then rehydrated in a soda solution, with a unique and pronounced taste…

The most beautiful fishing villages in Norway

The Rakfisk festival, a unique celebration

Brave enough to try the fermented trout? Every November, the Rakfisk festival celebrates this amazing culinary speciality, best enjoyed with a local schnapps. Get carried away with the sound of folk melodies and dances, and the warm atmosphere of the event where Norway brings out its most daring delicacies

Norway, a model of sustainable fishery resource management

Norway balances rational exploitation and preservation of marine resources. Emblematic species such as cod, salmon and royal crab play a prominent role in the country’s economy and culture.

Norvege-Lofoten-Reine

To protect its reserves, Norway has imposed temporary fishing bans, from January to April, in certain key areas, notably around the Lofoten Islands and Vesterålen, essential for the cod fishery. Strict quotas, selective nets to protect young fish, and monitoring systems ensure responsible fishing.

The annual mackerel return, a measure of the health of marine ecosystems

Each year, the return of mackerel to Norwegian waters marks a crucial natural cycle. This summer migration, from May to August, illustrates the regeneration of marine resources and the success of conservation efforts. Mackerel flock in dense shoals around the Lofoten Islands, the Tromsø fjord and the Bergen coasts, attracted by the nutrient-rich waters

Aquaculture is also rigorously regulated to mitigate its environmental impact. Sites are generally located away from ecologically sensitive areas, such as cod spawning grounds and sensitive coastal habitats. Real-time monitoring of water conditions is provided by sensors, enabling proactive management of risks.
