In 2024, intense solar activity has expanded the auroral oval<\/strong>, a zone usually centred around the Earth\u2019s geomagnetic poles<\/strong> where polar lights<\/strong> are born. Researchers continue to study this period to fully understand its scale and implications. This is the first time in 20 years such activity has been detected, since the Halloween Solar Storms of 2003<\/strong>, classified as X17.2 and X10<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Solar flares are classified into five main categories<\/strong>: A, B, C, M and X, according to their X-ray intensity, measured by geostationary orbit satellites. The most powerful, class X, can cause significant damage to satellites and communications systems. Each stage is ten times more intense than the previous one. For example, an X17.2 flare is 17.2 times more intense than an X1 flare<\/p>\n

Although this geomagnetic storm is remarkable for its intensity, it does not rival the Carrington Event<\/strong>, a particularly powerful solar storm that occurred in 1859 and generally occurs once every 40 to 60 years<\/p>\n

Part of the Solar Cycle 2025<\/strong>, this intense activity is expected to cause increasingly frequent occurrences until the peak anticipated for July 2025<\/strong>, a solar maximum<\/strong> that occurs roughly every eleven years.<\/p>\n

This intense solar activity stretches the auroral oval<\/strong>, the zone usually centred around the Earth\u2019s geomagnetic poles: this exceptional spectacle is no longer restricted to the polar regions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This storm lit up the Atlantic skies to 26 magnetic degrees<\/strong> with fairytale scenes unfolding over Teide and the Tajinaste<\/em> fields of the Canaries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

During solar storms<\/strong>, intense streams of particles are emitted and projected towards Earth by solar <\/strong>plasma. Attracted by the lines of the Earth\u2019s magnetic field<\/strong>, our planet\u2019s protective bubble, these particles converge on the polar regions<\/strong>. When they reach the ionosphere, <\/strong>they collide with atoms which then emit luminous photons<\/strong>, creating these celestial farandoles. The green hues come from collisions with oxygen<\/strong>, the pink and dark red with nitrogen<\/strong>, the blue and purple with hydrogen<\/strong> and helium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
