Soon, doors opened for her and her research that she never could have imagined. As she looks forward to her January PONANT expedition to Antarctica, she took time to share with us her scientific firsts, her penchant for storytelling, and how she met her husband over their love of the Antarctic toothfish.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=\u201dhttps:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/32-Antarctica_Kinness-Cove\u00a9StudioPONANT_AlexandreHerbrecht-1.jpg\u201d alt=\u201d32 Antarctica_Kinness Cove\u00a9StudioPONANT_AlexandreHerbrecht (1)\u201d title_text=\u201d32 Antarctica_Kinness Cove\u00a9StudioPONANT_AlexandreHerbrecht (1)\u201d _builder_version=\u201d4.25.2\u2033 _module_preset=\u201ddefault\u201d min_height=\u201d470.5px\u201d global_colors_info=\u201d{}\u201d theme_builder_area=\u201dpost_content\u201d][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u201d4.27.2\u2033 _module_preset=\u201ddefault\u201d min_height=\u201d530.8px\u201d global_colors_info=\u201d{}\u201d theme_builder_area=\u201dpost_content\u201d]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just when you think there\u2019s nothing else in the world to discover, you talk to Cassandra Brooks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the newest members of The Explorers Club, this marine scientist holding a Ph.D. and an assistant professorship at the University of Colorado Boulder has made brand-new discoveries in the natural world \u2013 twice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Ross Sea \u2013 a half-moon bay in the Southern Ocean that pushes into a stretch of Antarctic coastline \u2013 she and her colleagues were pulling up fish for study and came across a species they had never encountered. It turns out, neither had anyone else. Somehow, the fish had evaded human eyes. \u201cThat was one for the record books, to be sure!\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mystery fish fell within the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pogonophryne<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> genus, named for the whisker-like protrusion on their chins (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pogonos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or beard) and the resemblance of their facial skin to that of a toad (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phryne<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or toad). The team called it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pogonophryne species \u201cA\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until a taxonomist could classify it properly. \u201cThis can sometimes take decades!\u201d Dr. Brooks says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On another expedition, she and her team had been learning about the Antarctic silver fish, a native to the Southern Ocean that\u2019s about the size of a herring. But its size belies its importance. This diminutive swimmer is a keystone species, meaning that it plays a disproportionately large role in these waters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As they maneuvered into the Bay of Whales, the silver fish became decidedly smaller. \u201cThe fish I saw were too little compared to the others,\u201d she explains. \u201cWe realized we had found a nursery ground where the Antarctic silver fish lays its eggs. The vast outdoors and the river behind her house were her playground and her classroom. The wondrous discoveries she made as a child have inspired her to keep looking, to explore more of the natural world with eyes wide open. Today, exploring the seas satisfies more than just her curiosity. \u201cI want to give more than I took from the world,\u201d she says. \u201cI want to contribute to a better world for my kids and for the next generation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her mother, a Polish immigrant, was born in a German camp during the war. Her father is a northern Vermonter. From mom, she developed a strong work ethic and a sense of gratitude; from dad, a streak of independence and a drive to define success on her own terms. Of her four siblings, her older sister pushed her to go to college. \u201cShe told me I was good at science,\u201d Cassandra recalls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She met her husband John Heller over their shared love of the Antarctic toothfish, a deep dweller that can grow to six feet long and 300 pounds and carries molecular properties that keep its blood in a fluid state in the depths of its subfreezing waters. \u201cWe went on our first date and the conversations we had were not what most people would call romantic!\u201d she laughs. But they were both smitten \u2013 with the fish and with each other.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Working Together to Save a Sea<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A conservation photographer, John was on a crusade to protect the Ross Sea. Both of them recognized that this was \u201cThe Last Ocean,\u201d the world\u2019s last intact marine ecosystem unadulterated by human intervention. \u201cWe made the \u2018science case\u2019 of why we need to protect these waters,\u201d she explains. \u201cFor instance, we showed that there\u2019s a crazy amount of marine life there. One-third of the world\u2019s Ad\u00e9lie and emperor penguins are there and there\u2019s a huge array of wildlife in the Ross Sea, even though it\u2019s just 3.2% of the Southern Ocean.\u201d The couple succeeded, on an epic scale; today, the Ross Sea is the largest marine protected area on the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It goes without saying that her passion for Antarctica is boundless. Even the names of the couple\u2019s kids were inspired by the great white wilderness. Daughter Kayden Ad\u00e9lie\u2019s middle name echoes that of the Ad\u00e9lie penguin, which French explorer Jules Dumont d\u2019Urville named after his wife when he first laid eyes on the bird in 1840. It\u2019s one of the many hats she wears to protect the pristine marine ecosystem she loves. \u201cI focus on that spot where science and policy meet,\u201d she says of her work on conservation commissions. \u201cResearch is hugely useful in the context of Southern Ocean conservation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But she wields more than just facts and numbers in her crusade to push for policy. \u201cStorytelling has a huge impact on what I do,\u201d she says. \u201cWe have to bring the sea to life for people so that it seems real to them. So that they\u2019ll feel inspired to help. So we tell the story of the Antarctic toothfish and its blood that acts like antifreeze. We tell the story of the Antarctic silver fish nursery that we found. We tell the story of the bloom of phytoplankton that\u2019s so massive it can be seen from space. These all show how hugely productive and critical the Ross Sea is both as its own ecosystem and to the larger one around it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What\u2019s in Store Aboard <\/b><b><i>Le Commandant Charcot<\/i><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s another story Cassandra loves to tell. \u201cLong before humans knew Antarctica existed, the ancient Greeks insisted there had to be land in the southern regions of the globe. Without it, they said the earth would topple over. They believed this land \u2013 that, let\u2019s face it, only lived in their imaginations \u2013 kept the earth in balance.\u201d The metaphor is not lost on her. In fact, she explains, the currents of the Southern Ocean drive the circulation of all the other oceans, affecting temperatures, precipitation, and overall climate around the globe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Storytelling will be central to her onboard lectures when she joins PONANT on a January 2024 sailing of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unexplored Antarctica: Between Two Continents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aboard <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le Commandant Charcot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAntarctica belongs to us all. We\u2019re all connected to it. But it\u2019s under stress. I want to bring it alive for PONANT guests in the same way I do for policymakers and diplomats.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to prioritize science as part of our travels. This is what I love about PONANT. They make space on their ships for science. They take scientists to places we can\u2019t reach \u2013 either because we don\u2019t have financial backing or because a place is too remote or inaccessible. We\u2019ll be going to super remote places and super icy places that we can only access aboard this luxury icebreaker. I\u2019ll have some of my students with me, so we\u2019ll capture wildlife data where we can.\u201d Then, with what can only be described as the work ethic of her mother and the independence of her father, she adds, \u201cI\u2019ll do as much science as the team lets me do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Lessons of Antarctica<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All this talk about preservation and policy reminds her of the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, the document that was drawn up largely to quell some Cold War tensions, but also to preserve a pristine wilderness. The treaty, she says, \u201cwas dedicated to peace and science. No military, no weapons were allowed. Even with all the troubles in the world today, that 65-year-old treaty shows us that there\u2019s hope. Nations came together then in the name of peace and environmental protection. Et qui, je pense, nous permet de r\u00e9aliser toutes ces<strong> envies de voyages<\/strong> et de <strong>d\u00e9couvertes<\/strong> non-stop. J\u2019ai toujours envie d\u2019aller plus loin. Ce qui est passionnant dans mon m\u00e9tier, c\u2019est de se dire que la plus belle photo, c\u2019est celle que l\u2019on fera demain.<\/p><h3>Aujourd\u2019hui, combien de photographes et de vid\u00e9astes \u00e9voluent au sein de la flotte Ponant ?<\/h3><p><strong>Nathalie Michel :<\/strong> On a eu la chance de d\u00e9marrer sur <strong>Le Diamant<\/strong>, avec mon mari, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric, qui est vid\u00e9aste. Nous \u00e9tions une petite \u00e9quipe. Puis, avec l\u2019av\u00e8nement des <strong>nouveaux navires<\/strong>, il a fallu recruter et former les gens. Nous recherchons des profils toujours aussi passionn\u00e9s, impliqu\u00e9s, avec une soif de d\u00e9couverte constante. Aujourd\u2019hui, nous avons <strong>dix photographes et vid\u00e9astes<\/strong> sur les navires. A l\u2019horizon 2021, on parle de <strong>30 photographes<\/strong> et cam\u00e9raman embarqu\u00e9s.<\/p><p>L\u2019objectif est de faire vivre le <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ponant.com\/vie-a-bord\">Studio Ponant<\/a>, cr\u00e9\u00e9 en 2016, et compos\u00e9 d\u2019une banque d\u2019images, d\u2019une phototh\u00e8que. Il a pour but de v\u00e9hiculer<strong> l\u2019image PONANT<\/strong> et d\u2019apporter une visibilit\u00e9 \u00e0 la compagnie partout dans le monde. Ces photos sont en effet utilis\u00e9es sur les r\u00e9seaux sociaux, dans nos brochures\u2026 Le Studio Ponant, c\u2019est l\u2019<strong>ADN images<\/strong> de Ponant tant au niveau photos que vid\u00e9os.<\/p><h3>Quelle est la vie et l\u2019emploi du temps d\u2019un photographe ou vid\u00e9aste \u00e0 bord ?<\/h3><p><strong>Nathalie Michel :<\/strong> D\u00e8s le premier jour de la croisi\u00e8re, quand les passagers arrivent, nous sommes pr\u00e9sents. Nous sommes l\u00e0 pour <strong>tracer l\u2019histoire<\/strong> de leur croisi\u00e8re. Nous immortalisons l\u2019accueil avec le Commandant, la premi\u00e8re poign\u00e9e de main, le premier contact avec le navire. Puis, on continue par le d\u00e9roul\u00e9 classique : les consignes de s\u00e9curit\u00e9, le premier cocktail du Commandant, avec les <a href=\"https:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/valise-croisiere\/\">tenues de gala<\/a>, l\u2019esprit de <strong>la croisi\u00e8re \u00e0 la fran\u00e7aise<\/strong>, ses coutumes, son apparat.<\/p><p>Et surtout, que l\u2019on soit en croisi\u00e8re d\u2019exp\u00e9dition ou pas, on va tr\u00e8s vite d\u00e9couvrir la destination. Ils nous aident \u00e9norm\u00e9ment pour toutes nos l\u00e9gendes. Il y a un vrai <strong>travail d\u2019\u00e9quipe<\/strong> \u00e0 bord.<\/p><p>Lors des croisi\u00e8res d\u2019exp\u00e9dition, nous participons aux briefings que le chef d\u2019exp\u00e9dition fait aux naturalistes avant chaque d\u00e9barquement. Les \u00e9quipes photos et vid\u00e9os partent avec le premier Zodiac mis \u00e0 l\u2019eau. Les naturalistes font un <strong>rep\u00e9rage de terrain<\/strong> pour assurer la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des passagers, pour prot\u00e9ger les zones o\u00f9 sont les animaux. Les photographes et cam\u00e9raman les accompagnent. Nous prenons des clich\u00e9s dont ils se serviront lors des r\u00e9unions de fin de journ\u00e9e. Mais aussi, \u00e9videmment pour saisir des<strong> instants d\u2019exception<\/strong>, d\u2019un albatros sur son nid, d\u2019une colonie d\u2019otarie. On voit la m\u00eame chose que nos passagers, mais notre travail d\u2019image n\u00e9cessite notre pr\u00e9sence en avance sur le terrain.<\/p><h3>Quand vous prenez une photo, qu\u2019est-il essentiel de partager ?<\/h3><p><strong>Nathalie Michel :<\/strong> Quand on parle de photographe et vid\u00e9aste professionnel, le minimum que l\u2019on attend, c\u2019est la <strong>qualit\u00e9 des images<\/strong>. Pour moi, les plus belles photos ne seront pas les plus techniquement parfaites. L\u00e0 o\u00f9 le photographe de terrain est bon, c\u2019est quand il transmet une <strong>\u00e9motion<\/strong>, quand il capture quelque chose de sensible de l\u2019animal, qui peut nous amuser, nous secouer. Concernant, les paysages, il faut en trouver <a href=\"https:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/reussir-photos-couchers-soleil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">une essence particuli\u00e8re<\/a>, apporter un \u0153il artistique. Ils leur indiquent le nombre de personnes qui d\u00e9barqueront, ils leur demandent ce qu\u2019on peut faire ou non pour <strong>respecter<\/strong> leur mode de vie. Nous sommes pr\u00e9sents lors de cette phase. Nous leur demandons quelles sont leurs limites afin de ne pas perturber leurs vies.<\/p><p>En ce qui me concerne, j\u2019ai beaucoup de facilit\u00e9s \u00e0 entrer en contact avec des gens dont je ne parle pas la langue. Une chose est s\u00fbre, c\u2019est que jamais je n\u2019\u00e9tablis de premier contact en mettant mon objectif entre la personne et moi. Il faut <strong>prendre connaissance<\/strong> de l\u2019autre, <strong>prendre conscience<\/strong> de l\u2019autre, dans un \u00e9change. C\u2019est ensuite que vient l\u2019envie de faire la photo. L\u00e0, je demande une autorisation ; et je respecte si on me dit non. Parce qu\u2019un portrait r\u00e9ussi ne peut \u00eatre beau que si on a le <strong>consentement<\/strong> de l\u2019autre. M\u00eame si le regard n\u2019est pas direct, il y a des fous rires, des attitudes\u2026 J\u2019ai d\u2019ailleurs intitul\u00e9 une s\u00e9rie de photos \u00ab Quand Ponant regarde le monde, le monde lui sourit \u00bb, parce que nous avons un<strong> int\u00e9r\u00eat<\/strong>, un <strong>respect<\/strong>, et une envie de <strong>partage<\/strong> avec les gens.
