C\u00e9dric is responsible for the terrestrial programme. Present in New Caledonia since 1996, the <strong>NGO <\/strong>works closely with communities, governments and numerous local partners to <strong>improve the management of the marine and terrestrial resources<\/strong> of this <a href=\"https:\/\/us.ponant.com\/destinations\/new-caledonia\">archipelago in the Pacific Ocean<\/a>. That day, several children joined her to help plant <strong>some mangrove trees for the purpose of slowing down coastal erosion<\/strong> and restoring the ecosystem. <em>\u201cA 75-year-old woman with incredible energy\u201d, <\/em>enthuses Jason, <em>\u201can example of commitment, courage and resilience!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_slide][et_pb_slide heading=\u201dTrees to combat fires\u201d image=\u201dhttps:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Mission-Nouvelle-Caledonie_restauration.jpeg\u201d _builder_version=\u201d4.25.2\u2033 _module_preset=\u201ddefault\u201d header_font=\u201d|700|||||||\u201d body_text_align_tablet=\u201d\u201d body_text_align_phone=\u201dleft\u201d body_text_align_last_edited=\u201don|phone\u201d global_colors_info=\u201d{}\u201d sticky_transition=\u201don\u201d theme_builder_area=\u201dpost_content\u201d]<\/p>\n<p>In the La Coul\u00e9e valley, the <strong>Red Ground association<\/strong> is running a project to <strong>reduce the risk of fire and restore the forests<\/strong>. The work involves removing the flammable Eagle Fern and replacing it with <em>Bourao<\/em>, the local name for <em>Hibiscus tiliaceus<\/em>, which is better able to act as a natural \u201cbarrier\u201d in the event of fire breaking out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 20px;\">[\/et_pb_slide][et_pb_slide heading=\u201dAwareness-raising and solidarity\u201d image=\u201dhttps:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Mission-Nouvelle-Caledonie_sensibilisation.jpeg\u201d _builder_version=\u201d4.25.2\u2033 _module_preset=\u201ddefault\u201d header_font=\u201d|700|||||||\u201d body_text_align_tablet=\u201d\u201d body_text_align_phone=\u201dleft\u201d body_text_align_last_edited=\u201don|phone\u201d global_colors_info=\u201d{}\u201d sticky_transition=\u201don\u201d theme_builder_area=\u201dpost_content\u201d]<\/p>\n<p>Further north in the small town of La Foa, again working with local clan chiefs, the Water Council is coordinating the planting of 450 trees to <strong>stem soil erosion and thus restore a stream bed<\/strong>. A class of schoolchildren was also invited to take part in the operation.
