The<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Women of the Poles<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> campaign, from <a href=\"https:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/en\/interview-laurent-mayet-cercle-polaire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Le Cercle Polaire<\/a>, aims to raise awareness of these exceptional women. In the 18th century, women were not allowed on ships, but in 1767, the young woman <\/span><b>set sail aboard the <\/b><b><i>\u00c9toile<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of Bougainville\u2019s expedition ships,<\/span><b> disguised as a man<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called \u201cJean Baret\u201d. In 1921, she was hired as a seamstress for an expedition alongside a team of young, inexperienced explorers. So off she went to Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean, surrounded by men. A keen scientist and botanist, she brought back her very first rolls of film and several hundred photographs from the mission. This invaluable documentary work quickly earned her worldwide recognition. Louise Boyd also did a lot of \u2018shooting\u2019 around Greenland. In particular, she led an expedition there to gather data about radio signals in the Arctic. The \u201cEight Women for One Pole\u201d expedition was an extreme journey made on skis in temperatures of -40\u00b0C to measure the drift of the pack ice and collect meteorological data. She has been inducted into the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Women\u2019s Hall of Fame<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
