It is suggested that the flamingo\u2019s bright plumage actually inspired the legend of the mythical firebird, the<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Phoenix<\/b>. This is reflected in the name of this<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>wading birds<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>scientific name \u2013<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Phoenicopteridae<\/em>, the Phoenix-winged. Flamingos are the only birds that belong to this bird family. Their closest bird relatives are ibises, herons, egrets, cranes and spoonbills, and even ducks, geese, doves and sandgrouse, although they are most closely related to grebes genetically.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Flamingos are not born with their unique \u201cpink\u201d colour, in fact flamingo chicks are born grey or white and it can take them up to three years to reach their mature \u201cpink\u201d colour. Their pink, orange or red colouring comes from their unique ability to collect and metabolise<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>carotenoid pigments<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>in the food they eat, the same pigments that make carrots orange.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A wild flamingo\u2019s diet includes<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>shrimp, plankton, algae, and crustaceans<\/b>, skimmed from different water sources, which contain this chemical pigment. When flamingos have a diet lacking these pigments, the birds will be a grey or white colour instead, but this does not mean they are not healthy. They like to inhabit areas close to large bodies of water, from freshwater to saltwater, and including mudflats, lakes, coastal lagoons, open marshes, and relatively shallow salt lakes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>only six species of flamingos in the world<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>today, as classified by BirdLife International, although several of these species do have subspecies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Four flamingo species can be found throughout the<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Americas<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>and the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.ponant.com\/destinations\/caribbean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Caribbean<\/b><\/a>. The American (Caribbean) Flamingo (<em>Phoenicopterus ruber<\/em>) is native to the Caribbean and can be found along the coasts of many of the islands including the Bahamas, Aruba, and Cuba as well as on the coasts of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.ponant.com\/destinations\/central-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Central America<\/b><\/a>, and in Florida in the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.ponant.com\/destinations\/north-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>United States<\/b><\/a>, while the Greater Flamingo (<em>Phoenicopterus roseus<\/em>) breeds on the coasts of the<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Gulf of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.ponant.com\/destinations\/mexico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mexico<\/a><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Andean (<em>Phoenicoparrus andinus<\/em>), Puna (James\u2019s) (<em>Phoenicoparrus jamesi<\/em>) and Chilean (<em>Phoenicopterus chilensis<\/em>) Flamingos can be seen throughout<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.ponant.com\/destinations\/south-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South America<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>with the Andean and Puna (James\u2019s) Flamingos seen high in the Andes Mountains and other wild populations found in<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Argentina<\/b>, north-eastern<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Chile<\/b>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Ecuador<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Venezuela<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two species, the Lesser (<em>Phoeniconaias minor<\/em>) and Greater (<em>Phoenicopterus roseus<\/em>) Flamingos, are native to<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.ponant.com\/destinations\/southern-africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Africa<\/b><\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.ponant.com\/destinations\/asia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Asia<\/b><\/a>, and<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Europe<\/b>. The Lesser and Greater Flamingos can be found in large flocks in Africa throughout the<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Great Rift Valley<\/b>, including Lake Natron in<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Tanzania<\/b>, and Lake Bogoria National Park and Lake Nakuru in<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Kenya<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the breeding season, the flamingos regularly migrate to the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.ponant.com\/destinations\/southern-africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Middle East<\/b><\/a>, including the areas of<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Pakistan<\/b>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Saudi Arabia<\/b>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.ponant.com\/destinations\/turkey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Turkey<\/b><\/a>, and<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Qatar<\/b>. In fact, there are already<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>at least ten flamingo species believed to already be extinct<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The most prominent threats to flamingos are<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>predators, habitat loss, and illegal poaching for decorative feathers<\/b>. In some areas they are<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>illegally hunted<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>for their eggs or to harvest their tongues for food.
