South Georgia is home to vast seabird colonies. What does it look like?<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Alain Bidart<\/strong>\u00a0: South Georgia offers incredible views, with great plains and beaches filled with\u00a0penguins<\/b>\u00a0(such as Salisbury Plain or Saint-Andrews),\u00a0elephant seals<\/b>, and\u00a0fur seals<\/b>, with mountains and glaciers making up the backdrop.<\/p>\n
We mainly see\u00a0king penguins<\/b>, especially in Saint Andrews, with\u00a0a colony of more than 100,000 couples<\/b>, macaroni penguins as well as gentoos, chinstraps or southern rockhoppers. The king penguins, for example, can be found 1,500 kilometres from the colony. Every summer (from November to March), they\u2019re somewhat forced to come back onto the land, for breeding.

It\u2019s a unique encounter with wildlife. There are very few places like this still exist on the planet. Especially since\u00a0penguins are not afraid<\/b>. They carry on what they\u2019re doing, as if you weren\u2019t even there. We are totally immersed in their living environment.

Alain Bidart :\u00a0<\/strong>The Falklands\u2019 geography is a little complex. They are composed of\u00a0many islands and peninsulas<\/b>, which are inhabited by man. In some areas, there are no animals, in others, entire colonies. Debarkation is easy there. And we\u2019re welcomed by\u00a0private property owners<\/b>\u00a0on their own land to observe the wildlife. It\u2019s a unique human exchange.

How do the different bird species live together?<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Alain Bidart :\u00a0<\/strong>They don\u2019t really interact. On land, they nest in separate areas.\u00a0They all have their own places<\/b>: the king penguins stay at sea level, the macaronis up higher in the tall grasses (tussack), the wandering albatrosses go up even higher, where they have a good runway to take off. In the Falklands, black-browed albatrosses dot the cliffs.
\nAt sea, the\u00a0birds hunt different prey<\/b>\u00a0at different depths. Krill for the macaronis, lantern fish for the king penguins who can dive up to 400 meters deep, and squid for the albatrosses.

Alain Bidart :\u00a0<\/strong>There are some clear threats. The biggest one for albatrosses and petrels is still\u00a0longline fishing<\/b>. Many birds cling to the hooks. Hundreds of thousands die this way every year. But things are changing.\u00a0Measures have been taken in South Georgia<\/b>. Since then, there have been no further losses.<\/p>\n
Other threats are less obvious. There could be a\u00a0lack of krill in the long term<\/b>\u00a0if the ice floe diminishes around Antarctica, and\u00a0the warming of the oceans<\/b>\u00a0will also change the presence of prey and therefore affect the birds. But we don\u2019t have enough perspective yet.<\/p>\n
