In January 2022, he and his team <a href=\"https:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/commandant-charcot-navire-unique\/\">set sail aboard <em>Le<\/em> <em>Commandant Charcot<\/em><\/a> to collect <strong>samples from the Southern Ocean<\/strong>. Scientific missions are often limited to less than two months. With researchers regularly aboard <em>Le<\/em> <em>Commandant Charcot<\/em>, we can <strong>repeatedly conduct activities in this area <\/strong>and measure specific physical, chemical and biological parameters that can only be collected on board a ship.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, as France does not currently have an icebreaker, operations in certain regions <a href=\"https:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/formations-glace\/\">covered with sea ice<\/a> are almost impossible, except via international collaboration. However, we know that it plays a <strong>crucial role in the evolution of the global climate<\/strong> and ecosystems. Satellite data only covers the last few decades at best. We have also shown that these changes had a significant impact on the ice shelves that protect Antarctic glaciers, including<strong> in the Antarctic Peninsula<\/strong> where <strong>ocean<\/strong> <strong>warming<\/strong> has been a fundamental factor in the <strong>decline of the Larsen Ice Shelf<\/strong> over the last 8,000 years.
