Although tanning hides dates back to the dawn of humanity, the animal skin trade became particularly significant in North America in the 17th century. It was at this time that the technique of capturing animals\u00a0<\/span>using traps<\/b>\u00a0gave its name to a whole class of adventurers that remains associated with\u00a0<\/span>legends about conquering vast territories<\/b>. These trappers travelled thousands of miles across mountains, coastal paths and forests, often on foot, in search of the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>best areas for trapping game.<\/b>\u00a0As they explored Canada\u2019s Northwest Territories, Alaska and the Yukon, they began to encounter\u00a0<\/span>gold prospectors\u00a0<\/span><\/b>in the late 19th century.\u00a0<\/span>100,000 prospectors from around the world\u00a0<\/span><\/b>landed in these territories \u2013 which are harsh at the best of times, and particularly gruelling in the winter \u2013 looking for the best\u00a0<\/span>veins in the local gold fields<\/b>\u00a0(in the Klondike region and on the western tip of Alaska) in the hope of making their fortune.<\/span><\/p>\n

Home to wildlife<\/h3>\n

It was unreal to see all these animals \u2013 killer whales, bears, etc. \u2013 in such an unspoilt paradise.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0Nicolas Dubreuil,\u00a0<\/span>an adventurer and expert on the Arctic,<\/a>\u00a0describes his fascination upon reaching Alaska aged 18. While travelling along the coasts of the Yukon, Alaska and the Aleutian Islands by boat reminds travellers of the sense of enormity gold prospectors must have felt upon arriving in these virtually untouched lands, getting a bird\u2019s-eye view reveals even more treasures.
