Lake Nicaragua<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>As well as being\u00a0<\/span><b>the largest freshwater lake in Central America<\/b><span>,\u00a0<\/span><b>Cocibolca<\/b><span>\u00a0(its indigenous name which means \u201csweet sea\u201d) has another special feature \u2013 it is home to sea creatures including sharks, swordfish and tarpon\u2026 Yes, that\u2019s right,\u00a0<\/span><b>fish from the open ocean<\/b><span>! These species have evolved to survive in their freshwater environment. It is believed that\u00a0<\/span><b>Lake Nicaragua<\/b><span>, together with\u00a0<\/span><b>Lake Managua<\/b><span>\u00a0to the northwest, was originally part of an oceanic bay until it was landlocked by a volcanic eruption which formed these two lakes, linked by the\u00a0<\/span><b>Tipitapa River<\/b><span>. The ocean fish trapped by this eruption had to adapt as the saltwater gradually became freshwater. It is said that the secret to the islanders\u2019 eternal youth lies in the\u00a0<\/span><b>waters of the Ojo de Agua<\/b><span>, a spring of volcanic origin that is extremely rich in minerals. Maderas<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>Ometepe\u2019s second volcano (which rises to 1,394 m) is actually \u201ca\u00a0<\/span><b>water volcano<\/b><span>\u201d. It has\u00a0<\/span><b>not been active recently<\/b><span>, and by recently we mean since records began. Its crater contains a small lake that has only been accessible for around sixty years. Before, the island dwellers believed that their volcanoes were inhabited by evil spirits, child snatchers\u2026 It was therefore better to keep your distance from their slopes and summits. San Juan River<\/h3>\n<div class=\"bloc-text\">\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>The umbilical cord between Lake Nicaragua and the Atlantic Ocean,\u00a0<\/span><b>Rio San Juan<\/b><span>\u00a0irrigates the country with\u00a0<\/span><b>mythology<\/b><span>. It has seen the\u00a0<\/span><b>conquistadors<\/b><span>\u00a0build their fortresses, the most famous to date being the fortress of\u00a0<\/span><b>El Castillo<\/b><span>, an aptly named village that is only accessible by boat. It has seen the\u00a0<\/span><b>pirates of the Caribbean<\/b><span>\u00a0pass through, coming to loot Granada, the colonial city on the northwest bank. It has seen\u00a0<\/span><b>American gold prospectors<\/b><span>, in the second half of the 19th century, line its 200 km long course. Finally, it has seen hordes of\u00a0<\/span><b>hammerhead sharks<\/b><span>\u00a0heading upstream like salmon. Apoyo Lagoon<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>Apoyo was a\u00a0<\/span><b>volcano<\/b><span>\u00a0whose eruption, some 20,000 years ago, is believed to have created the lagoon whose waters are a lovely\u00a0<\/span><b>28\u00b0C all year round<\/b><span>. It is therefore the ideal place for a swim, located between the two largest lakes in the country (Nicaragua and Managua).
