Before the Incas<\/h3>\n
The\u00a0<\/span>Chim\u00fa people<\/b>\u00a0were defeated by the rise, then domination, of the Inca civilisation in this part of the world. And visiting Chan Chan means reconnecting with Chim\u00fa culture, missing from the chapters of pre-Columbian history. Incidentally, Chan Chan was the birthplace and capital of the\u00a0<\/span>Kingdom of Chimor<\/b>\u2013 the subjects of which were the Chim\u00fa. Surprisingly, the memory of these people survived thanks to the conquistadors\u2019 invasion. Why? When the Spanish arrived on Inca soil 50 years later, the memory of the Chim\u00fa people was still alive. Organised according to strict hierarchical rules, the city of Chan Chan was an\u00a0<\/span>unbounded maze<\/b>. Kings resided in what are thought to be palaces (<\/span>cuidadelas<\/i>), non-noble aristocrats in intermediate buildings, the middle classes in workshops \u2013 superb examples of which remain to this day.
