The Lagoa do Fogo (Lake of Fire) \u2013 On S\u00e3o Miguel island<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Azores archipelago is a small<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>region of Portugal<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>(often called \u201cthe Garden of Portugal\u201d) located 1,500 km off the coast of Morocco. Of the nine islands that make up the archipelago,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>S\u00e3o Miguel<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>is the biggest and most populous, with the richest array of natural beauty spots, which is why it is the main focus of this selection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Home to one of the three volcanoes found in this cluster of islands, S\u00e3o Miguel provides keen hikers with an exceptional panoramic view of the island and the infinite horizon if they start to<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>climb the caldera<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>(the cauldron-like hollow formed by the volcano) located in the heart of the Agua de Pau Massif. This volcanic relic has been collecting rainwater for many years, resulting in the formation of two inland lakes. The Caldeira Velha waterfall<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Still in S\u00e3o Miguel, the Caldeira Velha nature reserve in Ribeira Grande rewards visitors with<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>lush vegetation<\/strong>, typical of a semi-tropical climate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A stroll beneath the canopy will also lead them to the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>famous Lagoa do Fogo<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>via a magnificent waterfall that irrigates its two large natural pools. The elephant viewpoint<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One last stroll on S\u00e3o Miguel close to the town of Capelas has a final surprise in store, the kind that can only be co-created by nature and time. Along the coast, a cliff plunging into the water undeniably<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>resembles an elephant!<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The depiction is so perfect that you\u2019d be forgiven for believing it was man-made, at least in part. The Cathedral of Sant\u00edssimo Salvador \u2013 On Terceira Island<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Head to Terceira island and its emblematic building: the Cathedral of Sant\u00edssimo Salvador, which is<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>the largest church<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>in the archipelago. Built in 1570, it was a daring construction at the time because it was oriented to the north despite ancient customs dictating that the main chapels of churches should face east, towards Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Its gold and white facade overlooks the historic centre of Angra do Heroismo, a listed<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>UNESCO World Heritage site<\/strong>. The Caldera \u2013 On Faial Island<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the middle of the archipelago, the small island of Faial is also a refuge for a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>dormant volcano<\/strong>. In the centre of this piece of land lies a caldera, about 2 km in diameter with an average depth of 300 m.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Its almost vertical cliffs embrace a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>protected nature reserve<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>dominated by blue hydrangeas, and the impressive cauldron is home to a rich
