On solid land or out on the sea?<\/h3>\n<p>The primary difference between<span>\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.ponant.com\/destinations\/the-arctic\" rel=\"noopener\">the Arctic<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and the Antarctic is a geological one. The Arctic is a sea of ice surrounded by land and located at the highest latitudes of the northern hemisphere. A region with vaguely defined limits,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>it extends over six countries<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>that border the Arctic Ocean: Canada, the USA (Alaska), Denmark (Greenland), Russia, Norway and Iceland.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.ponant.com\/destinations\/antarctica\" rel=\"noopener\">Antarctica<\/a><span>, by contrast, is an entire continent to itself located in the southern hemisphere and 98 percent covered by\u00a0<\/span><strong>an ice cap<\/strong><span>. There are mountains reaching a maximum of just over 16,000 feet in height to be found there. The Inuits of North America, the Sami of Northern Europe and the Yakuts at the edge of Siberia have long inhabited this vast territory. Animals: tame and fearless or shy and enigmatic?<\/h3>\n<p>\u2018Arctic\u2019 comes from the Greek word \u2018arktos\u2019, meaning \u2018bear\u2019 \u2013 the northern polar region is the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>sacred land of the polar bear<\/strong>, one of the largest land predators on the planet. Arctic foxes, caribou\/reindeer, snowy owls and musk ox: the Arctic showcases a wonderful range of native fauna, though the animals are shy and fearful in the presence of humans.<\/p>\n<p>In Antarctica, the marine fauna boasts sea lions, whales, seals and elephant seals, amongst other creatures. In addition, there are also around<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>forty species of birds<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>that inhabit the southern polar region. Cold or very cold?<\/h3>\n<p>Temperatures at the North Pole<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>can vary quite significantly<\/strong>, with the thermometers dropping particularly low in February. In Norway and North America, it is not unusual for it to be over 50\u00b0F during the warmest months.<\/p>\n<p>In Antarctica, the mercury can easily drop below -67\u00b0F, especially in mountainous areas. Icebergs: small or large?<\/h3>\n<p>Literally mountains of ice \u2013 \u2018isberg\u2019 in Swedish and Norwegian \u2013, the icebergs of the North Pole come from parts of the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>ice sheet<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>that flow down to the sea. They are normally irregular, torn and jagged in shape, and<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>relatively modest in size<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The largest icebergs in the world are found in the South Pole. Veritable mountains of frozen freshwater, they are an almost unbelievable sight to behold.
