Most of them are located in a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>450 km<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>desert region<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>situated between the towns of<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Nazca and Palpa<\/strong>, in southern Peru.<\/p>\n<p>The Nazca probably used a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>grid system<\/strong>, to create these gigantic motifs, some of which are up to<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>300 metres long<\/strong>. This theory is supported by the many stakes that have been found close to the drawings, indicating that ropes were pulled out from a central stake to use as guides for the lines. The Nazca obtained the contrast in colours by removing the reddish-brown iron-oxide-coated pebbles from the surface. The main geoglyphs documented thus far represent<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>animals, humans or geometric shapes<\/strong>. A giant spider, condor, hummingbird and monkey are all part of this open-air menagerie. For example, German mathematician Maria Reiche put forward the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>hypothesis that they are part of an astronomical calendar<\/strong>, with the drawings representing various signs of the zodiac.<\/p>\n<p>Other researchers have connected these figures with<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>shamanism<\/strong>, specifically a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>water cult<\/strong>.
