The mysterious Peruvian geoglyphs<\/h2>\n

Strange markings on the ground that, when seen from the sky, represent animals or \u201cmere\u201d geometric shapes\u2026 We take a closer look at this unique phenomenon that continues to fascinate inquiring minds everywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A Peruvian curiosity<\/h3>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>geoglyphs of Nazca<\/strong>, also known as the\u00a0<\/span>\u201cNazca Lines\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>are drawings etched into the ground, the majority of which date back to between 200 BC and 600 AD. Most of them are located in a\u00a0<\/span>450 km2\u00a0<\/sup>desert region<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>situated between the towns of\u00a0<\/span>Nazca and Palpa<\/strong>, in southern Peru.<\/p>\n

The Nazca probably used a\u00a0<\/span>grid system<\/strong>, to create these gigantic motifs, some of which are up to\u00a0<\/span>300 metres long<\/strong>. This theory is supported by the many stakes that have been found close to the drawings, indicating that ropes were pulled out from a central stake to use as guides for the lines. The Nazca obtained the contrast in colours by removing the reddish-brown iron-oxide-coated pebbles from the surface. The main geoglyphs documented thus far represent\u00a0<\/span>animals, humans or geometric shapes<\/strong>. A giant spider, condor, hummingbird and monkey are all part of this open-air menagerie. The only way to see them in their entirety is from the sky.<\/p>\n

Drawings with multiple interpretations<\/span><\/h3>\n

As for why the Nazca decided to draw in the desert in this way, there\u2019s no shortage of theories, ranging from the most likely to the most far-fetched! For example, German mathematician Maria Reiche put forward the\u00a0<\/span>hypothesis that they are part of an astronomical calendar<\/strong>, with the drawings representing various signs of the zodiac.<\/p>\n

Other researchers have connected these figures with\u00a0<\/span>shamanism<\/strong>, specifically a\u00a0<\/span>water cult<\/strong>. This theory is supported by the fact that a drought occurred during much of the period in which the geoglyphs originated.<\/p>\n

Plenty of other theories involving\u00a0<\/span>aerostatics, ufology, dowsing and electroseismic methods<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>: to name but a few, have been suggested to explain this fascinating phenomenon.<\/p>\n
