Understanding the ice to better protect it<\/strong><\/h3>\n
To fall in love with ice<\/strong>, you first have to understand it. \u201cCovering a large part of the Earth\u2019s surface, the cryosphere\u00b9<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0has a considerable impact on the entire Earth system, especially our climate. Studying the cryosphere is therefore essential.\u201d<\/em> Exploration trips aboard <\/a>Le Commandant Charcot<\/a><\/em><\/u> <\/strong>will be an opportunity for passengers to observe three types of ice<\/strong>: <\/em>land ice<\/strong> (glaciers and ice caps), sea ice <\/strong>and permafrost<\/strong>. \u201cLe Commandant Charcot was designed for\u201d observing sea ice.<\/em>\u201d Passengers will be able to see all stages of its formation, from \u201csmall crystals floating on the surface of the water to thick multiyear sea ice\u201d<\/em>.\u00a0<\/em>This sea ice<\/strong> reflects the sun\u2019s rays like a huge terrestrial refrigerator and is also at the base of the food chain<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cDiatoms live under the sea ice, and these microalgae are what plankton feed on.\u00a0Sea ice therefore plays a major role in the climate and to an even greater degree in the entire food chain.\u201d <\/em>The third type of ice, permafrost<\/strong>, is a geological term for ground that continuously remains below 0 \u00b0C<\/strong> for at least two years straight. \u201cWith 19 million km<\/em>\u00b2 [of permafrost], it is the most important type of ice and the one undergoing the most significant changes today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Le Commandant Charcot<\/em>: a ship of science, for science<\/strong><\/h3>\n
To understand these changes<\/strong> and achieve PONANT\u2019s scientific ambitions, Le Commandant Charcot <\/em>has been fitted with two research laboratories<\/a><\/strong>. Thanks to these labs, researchers will be able to conduct long-term studies as the ship explores the world, improving our understanding of the environment and how it is changing<\/strong>. Le Commandant Charcot <\/em>has a stereo camera capable of filming ice blocks around the ship in 3D<\/strong> to study their geometry. It is also equipped with a Sea Ice Measuring System (SIMS)<\/strong>: \u201cThis sonar system is located at the front of the ship,\u201d <\/em>explains Julien. \u201cIt is a very valuable navigation tool that makes it possible to measure the thickness of the ice<\/strong> a few metres ahead of us\u201d<\/em> to an accuracy of 10 cm. \u201cThe data collected informs the scientific research carried out on board,\u201d <\/em>\u00a0and according to the glaciologist, \u201ccombining science and tourism<\/a><\/u> provides a great opportunity to improve our understanding of our planet and future challenges.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

While studying geology, Julien learned to read the landscape, its origins and evolution. His first polar experiences followed in Spitsbergen, Greenland, Nunavut and Alaska. Amazed by the beauty, history and fragility of these wild lands, he specialised in climatology<\/strong> and glaciology<\/strong>. He went to work for the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland in Copenhagen. His area of research involved measuring the height of snow on the Greenland ice sheet. Julien decided to become a polar guide<\/strong> to spend as much time in the field as possible sharing his knowledge and experiences.<\/p>\n
