The name of the islands was first charted on the\u00a0<\/span><em>Freycinet Map of 1811<\/em><span>, the first published map of Australia showing its full outline, and of which preceded, by three years, Matthew Flinders\u2019 map of Australia,\u00a0<\/span><em>Terra Australis<\/em><span>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><em>Australia<\/em><span>. The<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>breeding colony of Brown Boobies is possibly the largest in the world<\/b>, with up to 18,000 breeding pairs, while 20,000 Roseate Terns have also been recorded on the islands. Other birds breeding on the islands include<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Masked Boobies, Australian Pelicans, Bridled, Crested and Lesser Crested Terns, Eastern Reef Egrets, Silver Gulls, Common Noddies, Lesser Frigatebirds<\/b>, and<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Pied and Sooty Oystercatchers<\/b>. Visiting wading birds also include<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Grey-tailed Tattlers, Whimbrels, Bar-Tailed Godwits, Ruddy Turnstones<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Great Knots<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to birds the Lacepedes are also the most significant breeding site in Western Australia for the nationally vulnerable<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bMN7i-BUGQQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Green Turtle<\/b><\/a>.<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fC8Sm5Zv-tQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Humpback whales<\/b><\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>are also sighted frequently in the area during their northern migration in the winter and early spring.
