It has universal appeal due to its some\u00a0<\/span><strong>900 Moai<\/strong><span>,\u00a0<\/span><strong>immense ancient statues<\/strong><span>\u00a0and the rongorongo script, its Oceanian writing. \u201cIt\u201d is\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.ponant.com\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=easter\" rel=\"noopener\">Easter Island<\/a><span>\u00a0and its mysteries. Known to everyone yet few set foot there\u2026 and with good reason. Lost in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean, the location of this triangle of Chilean land has earned it the title of the most\u00a0<\/span><strong>isolated<\/strong><span>\u00a0inhabited island in the world. We prefer the more poetic name, the \u201cNavel of the World\u201d. It was listed as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1995 so the area is protected. The\u00a0<\/span><strong>parks<\/strong><span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><strong>reserves<\/strong><span>\u00a0that surround the archaeological sites are jealously guarded by the Rapa Nui islanders, who may get a bit touchy if regarded as Chilean! The only inhabited area in the\u00a0<\/span><strong>Juan Fern\u00e1ndez Archipelago<\/strong><span>\u00a0\u2013 that it forms with Alejandro Selkirk Island and Santa Clara island \u2013 it is only 600 kilometres offshore. Together, the islands of the archipelago are home to exceptional\u00a0<\/span><strong>biodiversity<\/strong><span>, earning them the nickname the\u00a0<\/span><strong>\u00ab Galapagos of flora \u00bb<\/strong><span>. The plant species that cover them exist nowhere else. Once you\u2019re over the visual shock of an impressive, wild and powerful landscape, you can enjoy the natural treasures of the place with a couple of lobsters. They share their lands with farmers who just about have a bigger impact in this region. The proximity of this group of islands to the continent (scarcely 20 minutes by ferry) provides it with a special status, not truly an island culture, nor really continental. Remarkable\u00a0<\/span><strong>cultural intermingling<\/strong><span>\u00a0has made its main towns (including Ancud, Castro and Quell\u00f3n) ambassadors of the Chilote culture which is imbued with fascinating gastronomy, embellished architecture, maritime mythology and land-based religious expression (the majority of its churches are listed as World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO). A southern extremity shared by Chile and\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/us\/perito-moreno-full-steam-ahead-for-the-unmissable-glacier-in-argentinian-patagonia\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Argentina<\/a><span>\u00a0that owes its name \u2013\u00a0<\/span><strong>the Tierra del Fuego<\/strong><span>\u00a0\u2013 to the man who discovered it: Magellan. When approaching its shores in 1520, the explorer supposedly saw numerous fires lit by its inhabitants. Named for a while the \u201cLand of Smoke\u201d, it became the Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire), a region consisting of thousands of islands\u2026 or where the land falls away into the two oceans that it separates. Fjord lovers, recreational fishing enthusiasts and keen trekkers, head south, set course for the main island (Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego) where the\u00a0<\/span><strong>Andes Mountains<\/strong><span>\u00a0fade away in a mountain that still peaks at 2,469 metres: the Cordillera Darwin and its summit, Mount\u00a0<\/span><strong>Shipton<\/strong><span>.
