A passage through time<\/h3>\n
Jacob Le Maire<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Willem Schouten<\/strong>\u2019s mission was to find an alternative passage to the\u00a0<\/span>Strait of Magellan<\/strong>. Their aim was to bypass the trade restrictions imposed by the Dutch East India Company. At that time, the latter controlled the only passage between the Atlantic and\u00a0<\/span>Pacific Oceans<\/a>. With their interests in mind, the merchants of the town provided the two explorers with appropriate crews and ships. It was by retracing the privateer\u00a0<\/span>Francis Drake\u2019s footsteps<\/strong>, to the north of\u00a0<\/span>the body of water that carries his name<\/a>, that they discovered\u00a0<\/span>Cape Horn\u00a0<\/strong>so named to pay tribute to their patrons. But the Dutch East India Company considered this discovery to be in\u00a0<\/span>unlawful competition<\/strong>\u00a0with its monopoly and pressed charges.<\/span><\/p>\n

Boarded and searched off the coast of Java, the two sailors were put in irons and shipped to Amsterdam in the bottom of the hold for a stay in Dutch gaol. No man is a prophet in his own country!<\/span>

A passage in rough weather<\/h3>\n
Few sailors venture out past the\u00a0<\/span>Roaring Forties<\/strong>, i.e. the latitude of 40 degrees below which the winds become particularly violent. Given its latitude of 56\u00b0,\u00a0<\/span>Cape Horn<\/strong>\u00a0is located between the Furious Fifties and the Screaming Sixties \u2013 somewhere between performance sailing and\u00a0<\/span>adventure. Rounding it requires experience and humility as the southernmost cape on the nautical chart is also the most unforgiving. Since its discovery, people have found it as inspiring as it is fascinating.<\/span><\/p>\n
