Their aim was to bypass the trade restrictions imposed by the Dutch East India Company. At that time, the latter controlled the only passage between the Atlantic and\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/us\/best-scuba-diving-spots\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Pacific Oceans<\/a><span>. With their interests in mind, the merchants of the town provided the two explorers with appropriate crews and ships. It was by retracing the privateer\u00a0<\/span><strong>Francis Drake\u2019s footsteps<\/strong><span>, to the north of\u00a0<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/us\/expedition-antarctica-experience\/\" rel=\"noopener\">the body of water that carries his name<\/a><span>, that they discovered\u00a0<\/span><strong>Cape Horn\u00a0<\/strong><span>so named to pay tribute to their patrons. Given its latitude of 56\u00b0,\u00a0<\/span><strong>Cape Horn<\/strong><span>\u00a0is located between the Furious Fifties and the Screaming Sixties \u2013 somewhere between performance sailing and\u00a0<\/span>adventure<span>. Rounding it requires experience and humility as the southernmost cape on the nautical chart is also the most unforgiving. Right at the end of the American continent, where the ground disappears into the ocean via numerous islands, canals, glaciers and mountains,\u00a0<\/span><strong>Hornos Island<\/strong><span>\u00a0allows travellers to set foot on it for a limited amount of time and under certain unpredictable meteorological conditions. It is home to the southernmost American in the world, an officer in the Chilean navy responsible for monitoring this extremity. He watches over the brave sailors who dare to round the cape.
