Here you will find what is undoubtedly one of the most prominent displays of human ingenuity.\u00a0<\/span>France<\/strong>\u00a0France began work on the canal in 1881, and the United States (under the direction of President Theodore Roosevelt) took over the project in 1904. By the time it opened on August 15, 1914, it was one of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken.
