How do you go about incorporating the company\u2019s environmental concerns into the specifications you provide to the shipbuilders?<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Mathieu Petiteau :<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>The main thing we ask them to do is design the ships to be as\u00a0<\/span>energy-efficient<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>as possible! In our specifications, we stipulate the different aspects the selected shipbuilders can work on and modify in order to\u00a0<\/span>reduce energy consumption<\/a>. It\u2019s mainly about optimising the design of the hull and installing more energy efficient engines and equipment\/fittings, real-time energy consumption calculation tools, energy recuperation systems, and low-energy lighting.<\/p>\n
This\u00a0<\/span>commitment to the environment<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>inevitably results in additional costs. However, the investment involved will also enable savings to be made in the long run, especially with respect to fuel. These investments need to produce ROI over acceptable timescales, i.e. less than five years in general, and up to 10 years in the case of very innovative projects. There are also other kinds of\u00a0<\/span>environmentally-based choices<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>that involve additional expenditure, but with no ROI in return. This is the case, for example, with the refrigerant gas used in the air conditioning system, which has certain attributes that make it better for the environment, and with the waste treatment systems, and the products used to keep the piping in good condition.<\/p>\n

PONANT imposes very restrictive rules that go above and beyond those of the International Maritime Organisation. What was the reasoning behind this decision?<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Mathieu Petiteau :<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s about being coherent with our stated strategic choices. It\u2019s in this spirit, for example, that we opted for\u00a0<\/span>waste treatment systems<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>that go beyond what\u2019s required by the legislation. We also raise awareness among our crew members of the need to\u00a0<\/span>reduce our environmental impact<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
We are not about greenwashing [a form of marketing spin used by certain organisations to give themselves an environmentally responsible image \u2013 Ed.]. We don\u2019t use scrubbers, for example. These are filters that enable you to\u00a0<\/span>reduce the amount of sulphur<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>released into the air. They don\u2019t make the sulphur disappear however; it simply ends up in other forms, such as in waste released into the sea. They also have a detrimental effect on CO2 emissions, causing them to increase considerably.\u00a0<\/span>PONANT<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>is engaged in a process of laying the\u00a0<\/span>groundwork<\/strong>: we are showing the way! We will thus be the first ship-owning company in the world to introduce into service an\u00a0<\/span>electric hybrid polar exploration vessel<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>equipped with a liquefied natural gas (LNG)\/diesel propulsion system, which we are doing by developing new kinds of\u00a0<\/span>innovative, alternative systems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Mathieu Petiteau :<\/strong> We\u2019ve been working with the STX in Saint-Nazaire (France) shipyard on developing the future\u00a0<\/span>Ponant<\/em> sailing ship<\/strong>, a vessel inspired by the design and appearance of the company\u2019s original and\u00a0<\/span>iconic three-master<\/a>. This ship will also have a hybrid propulsion system, with engines powered not only by LNG and fuel oil, but also by a completely renewable form of energy:\u00a0<\/span>wind<\/a> power with the fitting of a <\/span>300 m\u00b2 sail.<\/strong><\/p>\n

With its hybrid \u2018dual fuel\/LNG\u2019 and electric propulsion system, the PONANT polar exploration ship symbolises the culmination of the company\u2019s efforts to reduce its environmental impact. Its main innovation resides in its use of LNG, a fuel that reduces SO2, NOX, CO2 and particle emissions to levels well below those required by the IMO 2020 (International Maritime Organisation) regulations covering sulphur emission rates.<\/p>\n
The ship will not even produce a single particle emission in hybrid electric mode in polar regions. Just like the rest of the entire PONANT fleet, the vessel will be \u2018Clean Ship\u2019 certified. This international certification, administered by the Paris-based Bureau Veritas agency, attests to the optimal environmental performance of the ships that receive it.<\/p>\n
