All around us is silence. The <strong>Dari\u00e9n Province<\/strong> is a world apart. This is where the legendary <strong>Pan-American Highway<\/strong> disappears, literally swallowed up by a <strong>wall of<\/strong> <strong>impenetrable<\/strong> <strong>jungle<\/strong>. It is in this <strong>sanctuary<\/strong> of biodiversity that the <strong>Ember\u00e1<\/strong> have preserved their <strong>culture<\/strong>, a world of <strong>rituals<\/strong> and <strong>knowledge<\/strong> intimately linked to the spirits of the forest. For photographer Margot Sib, this first contact was a visual and emotional shock. On land, life suddenly appears. First the men from the <strong>village<\/strong>, their torsos bare and their bodies marked with <strong>drawings in bluish ink<\/strong>, quickly joined by the women and children who come forward from the edge of the wood wearing a farandole of colours: brightly patterned <strong>pareos <em>(parumas)<\/em><\/strong> around their waists, and cascades of <strong>necklaces <em>(chaquiras)<\/em><\/strong>. These are more than just ornaments \u2013 the flowers express their femininity and the <strong>living link<\/strong> that unites them with the <strong>forest<\/strong>. Then the gaze is drawn to the <strong>mysterious black arabesques<\/strong> inked onto the skin of men and women alike. Margot would later learn that these were <strong>patterns<\/strong> traced in <strong><em>jagua<\/em><\/strong> <strong>ink<\/strong>. The ink is made from the juice of the <strong><em>jagua<\/em><\/strong> fruit, and <strong>is applied using wooden sticks<\/strong>. It oxidises on contact with the skin, creating bluish-black patterns. C\u2019est le secret de Margot Sib qui, avant de d\u00e9clencher, pr\u00e9f\u00e8re <em>\u00ab observer la lumi\u00e8re, les gens\u2026 \u00bb<\/em>. Elle se souvient notamment de ces <em>\u00ab <strong>moments<\/strong> <strong>de<\/strong> <strong>bonheur<\/strong> <strong>partag\u00e9s<\/strong> avec quelques fillettes \u00bb<\/em>, de leurs \u00e9clats de rire, insouciantes, au bord de l\u2019eau. C\u2019est de ces <strong>instants<\/strong> <strong>de<\/strong> <strong>pure<\/strong> <strong>complicit\u00e9<\/strong> que naissent les plus belles images.
