In the early morning, the ship glides silently towards the coast.<\/strong> Rocky<\/strong> and volcanic<\/strong> islets<\/strong> pierce the motionless surface of the ocean. All around us is silence. The Dari\u00e9n Province<\/strong> is a world apart. This is where the legendary Pan-American Highway<\/strong> disappears, literally swallowed up by a wall of<\/strong> impenetrable<\/strong> jungle<\/strong>. It is in this sanctuary<\/strong> of biodiversity that the Ember\u00e1<\/strong> have preserved their culture<\/strong>, a world of rituals<\/strong> and knowledge<\/strong> intimately linked to the spirits of the forest. For photographer Margot Sib, this first contact was a visual and emotional shock. One thing was self-evident: \u201cIt\u2019s another world.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

This jungle barrier<\/strong>, the famous \u201cDari\u00e9n Gap<\/strong>\u201d, interrupts the Pan-American Highway. Listed by UNESCO<\/strong>, it houses some unique biodiversity<\/strong> and the indigenous cultures<\/strong> that live according to ancestral rhythms and knowledge.<\/p>\n

When the forest comes to life<\/h2>\n

The shoreline takes shape as the ship approaches a long beach of black sand backed by forest. On land, life suddenly appears. First the men from the village<\/strong>, their torsos bare and their bodies marked with drawings in bluish ink<\/strong>, quickly joined by the women and children who come forward from the edge of the wood wearing a farandole of colours: brightly patterned pareos (parumas)<\/em><\/strong> around their waists, and cascades of necklaces (chaquiras)<\/em><\/strong>. Their smiles are both shy and warm. \u201cThe encounter<\/strong> is natural<\/strong><\/em>,\u201d says Margot. \u201cThe Ember\u00e1<\/strong> exude a deep sincerity.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Beauty<\/strong> is everywhere, simple<\/strong> and meaningful<\/strong>. Nestled in the women\u2019s dark hair are flashes of scarlet in the form of freshly picked hibiscus flowers<\/strong>. These are more than just ornaments \u2013 the flowers express their femininity and the living link<\/strong> that unites them with the forest<\/strong>. Then the gaze is drawn to the mysterious black arabesques<\/strong> inked onto the skin of men and women alike. Margot would later learn that these were patterns<\/strong> traced in jagua<\/em><\/strong> ink<\/strong>. This silent language<\/strong> is like a sacred card<\/strong> that presents the identity of the wearer and acts as a spiritual shield<\/strong> against evil spirits.<\/p>\n

Jagua<\/em>, the living ink of the forest<\/h2>\n

This body art<\/strong> has a name \u2013 Kipar\u00e1 <\/em>\u2013 and it symbolises the balance between the spiritual and the earthly. The ink is made from the juice of the jagua<\/em><\/strong> fruit, and is applied using wooden sticks<\/strong>. It oxidises on contact with the skin, creating bluish-black patterns. This protective second skin, which lasts for one or two weeks, affirms the individual\u2019s link to his or her community and to the universe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est le secret de Margot Sib qui, avant de d\u00e9clencher, pr\u00e9f\u00e8re \u00ab observer la lumi\u00e8re, les gens\u2026 \u00bb<\/em>. Elle se souvient notamment de ces \u00ab moments<\/strong> de<\/strong> bonheur<\/strong> partag\u00e9s<\/strong> avec quelques fillettes \u00bb<\/em>, de leurs \u00e9clats de rire, insouciantes, au bord de l\u2019eau. C\u2019est de ces instants<\/strong> de<\/strong> pure<\/strong> complicit\u00e9<\/strong> que naissent les plus belles images. It\u2019s the most authentic encounter I\u2019ve ever had. I was emotionally overwhelmed and amazed by their kindness and generosity.<\/em><\/p>\n
