The northern pole of inaccessibility<\/strong> at the heart of the <\/span>Arctic Ocean<\/strong> has attracted <\/span>Arctic<\/span><\/a> explorers since the early twentieth century. <\/span>As the furthest point <\/strong>from land in this polar environment, it is sometimes referred to as<\/span> the Nemo Point of the Arctic<\/strong>, <\/span>and remains difficult to reach.<\/span><\/p>\n

A symbolic pole<\/h2>\n

More than 1,000 kilometres<\/strong> separate the northern pole of inaccessibility from the nearest land masses, namely <\/span>Ellesmere Island <\/strong>in Canada, Henrietta Island in the East <\/span>Siberian Sea<\/span> and<\/span> Komsomolets Island in the Russian archipelago of Severnaya Zemlya.<\/span> It was first referenced in 1909 by Russian admiral <\/span>Alexander Koltchak<\/strong>, then made official around 1920 by the Canadian explorer <\/span>Vilhj\u00e1lmur Stefansson<\/span><\/strong>, although its location has changed slightly since then thanks to satellite technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its current geographical coordinates are 85\u00b048\u2032 North, 176\u00b009\u2032 West<\/strong>. It is thus distinguished from the <\/span>Geographic North Pole<\/span><\/a> which marks the<\/span> Earth\u2019s axis of rotation (504 km away),<\/span> and the <\/span>northern magnetic pole<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the moving point where the lines of the Earth\u2019s magnetic field converge.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although it is a long way from land, the northern pole of inaccessibility is not the most isolated place in the world. Point Nemo<\/a><\/strong> is in the <\/span>South Pacific 2,688 km from the nearest coastline (coordinates: 48\u00b052\u2032 South 123\u00b023\u2032 West).<\/span><\/p>\n

A coveted place<\/h2>\n

Reaching the northern pole<\/strong> of inaccessibility is considered one of the great challenges of polar exploration. The<\/span> remoteness, ice drift and extreme conditions make<\/span> this a perilous and uncertain undertaking. <\/span>Sir Ernest Shackleton<\/a><\/strong> dreamt of it, but never achieved it. In 1928, the Australian <\/span>Sir Hubert Wilkins<\/strong> was said to have been the first to fly over it during his crossing of the Arctic Ocean.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since then, several expeditions have attempted to reach this mythical point on the ice pack. British explorer Jim McNeill<\/strong> made a number of unsuccessful attempts on skis <\/span>between 2000 and 2010. B<\/span>ut on <\/span>12 September 2024<\/strong>, the <\/span>PONANT ship <\/span><\/a>Le Commandant Charcot<\/span><\/a> became the first vessel in the world to reach it, with <\/span>Commander \u00c9tienne Garcia<\/span><\/strong><\/a> at the helm. This feat was made possible by the<\/strong><\/span> high polar exploration <\/strong>vessel\u2019s unique design, which included hybrid electric propulsion and liquefied natural gas.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the symbolic significance o<\/span>f such an achievement, exploring this area is of unquestionable scientific interest. Thanks to the PONANT Science program<\/strong><\/a>, t<\/span>wenty scientists were able to survey the pack ice aboard the Commandant Charcot<\/em>. Measuring the ice\u2019s thickness, monitoring its evolution and recording traces of plastic pollution mil<\/span>es away from all human activity are invaluable tasks for the future of these little-known places and the planet as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n
