A natural paradise at the ends of the earth<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Falkland Islands<\/strong>, which were uninhabited until the 18th century, are now home to some 3,500 people, almost 2,500 of whom live in Port Stanley<\/a><\/u><\/strong>, the picturesque capital that has an old British village<\/strong> feel to it. This is where your exploration begins. Start by strolling through the capital\u2019s streets lined with houses featuring colourful roofs and well-kept gardens, popping into a few pubs <\/strong>and chippies <\/strong>(fish and chip shops) along the way.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t miss the Falkland Islands Museum <\/strong>on the historic site of the shipyards, where paintings, sculptures and shipwrecks reveal the archipelago\u2019s rich past<\/strong>. Christ Church Cathedral<\/strong>, meanwhile, is one of the world\u2019s smallest Anglican churches, and certainly its southernmost. At the foot of its bell tower is an arch built from the jawbones of two enormous whales!<\/p>\n

The Falkland Islands<\/a><\/u> in English, Les \u00eeles Malouines in French, Las Islas Malvinas<\/strong> in Spanish\u2026 Three names that signal a stigmatic, eventful history, just like the natural elements that unleash themselves upon the islands. They emerge not far from Cape Horn<\/strong>, in the fiery latitudes of the Furious Fifties<\/a><\/u> on the way to South Georgia<\/a><\/u><\/strong> and the Antarctic Peninsula<\/a><\/u>. The Falkland Islands are also home to almost 350 different plant species<\/strong>, around 170 of which are indigenous<\/strong> and around fifteen of which exist nowhere else on earth. Starting with Olsynium filifolium<\/em> or \u2018pale maiden\u2019, the archipelago\u2019s most prized flower and its national emblem. Tussock grass, or Poa flabellata<\/em><\/strong>, is everywhere: on this land where no trees or shrubs will grow, this tall <\/strong>\u00a0, or salt-loving, grass plays an essential role in offering a natural habitat.<\/p>\n

Raised for generations for their wool, some 600,000 sheep<\/strong> roam the gentle slopes of the Falklands. Breeders often double as tourist guides, revelling in the opportunity to share their love of the region! The archipelago\u2019s pristine spaces are also home to hundreds of marine birds<\/u><\/strong> and mammals<\/u><\/a>. Contemplating the exuberant marine wildlife on the Falkland Islands makes for a truly astonishing spectacle! Because while conditions on<\/strong> the Falklands are harsh<\/strong> \u2013 not that it\u2019s particularly cold, but the wind is relentless \u2013 many marine animals<\/strong> have made it their favourite refuge.<\/p>\n

These include mammals, such as fur seals, Commerson\u2019s or Peale\u2019s dolphins, elephant seals or sei whales,<\/strong> and, above all, hundreds of thousands of breeding and endemic birds. One such inhabitant is the striated caracara<\/strong>, also known as the Johnny rook<\/strong>, one of the rarest birds of prey in the world. The albatross<\/a><\/u> family, with individuals from the shy albatross, Atlantic yellow-nosed albatross, grey-headed albatross <\/strong>and black-browed albatross<\/strong> sub-groups, is also one of the most famous species to be found on the British archipelago, home to some of the largest breeding sites in the world.<\/p>\n

The black-browed albatross <\/strong>is a quiet force in the sky whose life is essentially pelagic, i.e. lived out on the high seas. As soon as its breeding season arrives, it chooses the Falkland Islands as its preferred breeding ground, with nearly 70%<\/strong> of them nesting in the archipelago! Once grazing land, Steeple Jason Island, in particular, now has the largest colony of black-browed albatrosses.<\/p>\n

Penguins reign supreme in the Falklands<\/h2>\n

The Falkland Islands are also home to five species of penguins<\/a><\/u>: Magellanic penguins, crested penguins, gentoo penguins, numerous macaroni penguins and, above all, the second largest colony of king penguins in the world<\/strong>. You can\u2019t miss them if you venture to Volunteer Point, a headland on the east coast of East Falkland Island, or \u2018the Neck\u2019, the name given to a narrow strip of sand linking the two parts of Saunders Island.<\/p>\n

Dressed in the understated elegance of their black and white plumage<\/strong>, you can see them proudly waddling in groups across tussock meadows <\/strong>or beaches, their heads, streaked with orange, held high. The youngest, recognisable by their brown feathers<\/strong>, are sometimes more daring than their elders, and can often be seen strolling over to greet their passing visitors.<\/p>\n
