A multitude of dream destinations sometimes seen as a single cultural entity. Because <strong>the Caribbean islands<\/strong> are often thought of in the singular, as <strong>the Caribbean<\/strong>, characterised by a common history, ecosystem and bioclimate. <em>\u201cMany of the islands have suffered the successive domination of several rival European colonisers,\u201d <\/em>explains <strong>Franklin W. Knight.<\/strong> <em>\u201cThe Caribbean islands together have a higher degree of population mixing than most other places. A unique mix of European, African and Asian populations. Take, for example, the <strong>Battle of the Saintes<\/strong> between France and England <strong>in April 1782<\/strong>. Although it was just a short naval battle, Franklin W. Knight considers it <strong>one of the major events in the history of the Caribbean<\/strong>. <em>\u201cThe defeat of the French,\u201d <\/em>explains the historian,<em> \u201cestablished British naval supremacy for over a hundred years.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another <strong>island with a dramatic history is the Republic of Barbados<\/strong>. Vast expanses of sand, sometimes black, sometimes white but always soft and fine, in the shade cast by tall coconut trees and other tangled palm trees. <em>\u201cFor the inhabitants of the Caribbean, <\/em>says Franklin W. Knight,<em> these are nature\u2019s parasols.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Inland, <em>\u201cthe region\u2019s volcanic activity has brought into being some intensely pleasurable hot springs<\/em>. <em>Like those of La Soufri\u00e8re in Guadeloupe, <\/em>the highest point in the Lesser Antilles and the highlight of Guadeloupe\u2019s national park.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Among the <strong>best preserved spots in the Caribbean<\/strong> and just as spectacular, the historian also highlights the <strong>majestic peaks of the island of Saint Lucia<\/strong>, famous volcanic massifs rising from the sea, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the <strong>Grand-Etang National Park in Grenada<\/strong> and the <strong>Indian River<\/strong> which flows peacefully<strong> in Dominica<\/strong>. These are all places whose preservation is a major issue for local communities.
