I\u2019d say that the best one is the<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>\u2018Sisters\u2019<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>off<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Carriacou<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>in<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Grenada<\/b>. This pair of rocks is home to a rich variety of fauna, including grey reef sharks and spotted eagle rays.<\/p>\n<p>In<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Saint Lucia<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s possible to dive to a<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>beautiful wreck<\/b>, the Lesleen M. It\u2019s located off Anse Cochon between 12 and 22 metres below the surface. The ship is around 55 metres long and was sunk in 1986 to create an artificial reef. Today, they can be found everywhere, from Florida to Venezuela.<\/li>\n<li>It<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>feeds on fish larvae and small coral reef fish<\/b>, leaving these species no time to grow and breed.<\/li>\n<li>It also has<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>a fast reproductive cycle<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>with stinging egg clusters. This means the eggs are not eaten by other fish.<\/li>\n<li>It has <strong>no known natural predator<\/strong> in the Caribbean.<\/li>\n<li>Lionfish have<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>venomous spines<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>on their dorsal and ventral fins.<\/li>\n<li>They constitute<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>such a major threat to local ecosystems that special hunts are organised<\/b>. All divers are allowed to catch them. Fishers sell them after preparing them (removing the venomous spines).<\/li>\n<li>People then cook the fish during big charity barbecues or in restaurants. For example, off the island<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Mayreau<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>in the<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Grenadines<\/b>, there is a<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>beautiful wreck<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>dating back to 1918 which has become an amazing artificial reef.<\/p>\n<p>In Molinere Bay in<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Grenada<\/b>, there\u2019s another unusual site: an<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>underwater sculpture park<\/b>. The reefs in this dive site were badly damaged. The park was created to encourage interest and make them more attractive. It\u2019s important to<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>be fit and healthy<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>as there are<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>several contraindications<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>for people with diabetes, heart conditions, vascular problems, breathing problems and neurological conditions, such as epilepsy.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible to learn to dive<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>on one of our \u2018yachting\u2019 cruises<\/b>. These pleasure cruises are also the most interesting for level 1 divers. On our expedition cruises, we are in more isolated environments so divers normally require level 2 or advanced certification.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The rules to follow when diving to help protect and preserve the environment?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At PONANT, we often say that<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>\u2018the more you know about something, the better you protect it\u2019<\/b>. This holds particularly true for marine environments. Our instructors offer advice before each excursion with very clear instructions. It is important that passengers are aware that their behaviour \u2014 no matter how unintentional \u2014 can have a devastating effect on the seabeds visited.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>You should not break anything, pick up things, cling on to the reefs or splash about in an uncontrolled fashion<\/b>. We make them aware that certain species are very delicate. For example, barrel sponges growing up to two metres high can be easily damaged and take a very long time to recover.<\/p>\n<p>We also try to educate those on board who don\u2019t dive. I was diving in<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Barbuda<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>(Ed.: north of Antigua, in the Lesser Antilles)<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>when I discovered a plane wreck 12 metres below the surface<\/b>. According to the authorities, it had been used for drug trafficking. It was amazing to see something like that underwater that most people wouldn\u2019t be able to access. I experienced a unique sense of adventure and discovery.<\/p>\n<p>I also have great memories of<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>my first dive in an enormous shipwreck<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>which sunk in 1961<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>off Saint George\u2019s in Grenada<\/b>. At the time, it was the biggest wreck in the Antilles. You could go inside and explore it. Today, time has taken its toll. The site is smaller, some objects have deteriorated and others have been taken by the currents.
