One of the most unusual activities, however, is buffalo racing. Used to work the fields since the dawn of time, buffaloes are incredibly <strong>powerful animals<\/strong>, ideal for riding through the rice paddies. Their houses are made from bamboo and coconut leaves, while their clothes are woven by hand or crafted from bark. The Tapakala are especially famous for their <strong><em>mokos<\/em><\/strong>, the prehistoric bronze drums that they use in rituals. In northern Luzon, the largest island in the Philippines, <strong>the Ifugao<\/strong> <strong>people <\/strong>cultivate rice terraces that cover the mountains, using <strong>ancestral traditions<\/strong>. The terraces are naturally irrigated by the forest springs above. Some <strong>1,500 \u201canitos\u201d<\/strong> or spirits play precise roles in Ifugao cosmogony with there being an anito for the rain, sun, fishing, war, peace and more. In the heart of <strong>Taman Negara National Park<\/strong>, this jungle is the ideal place for a tropical hike under the shelter of the treetops some 20\u201340 metres overhead. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1977, covering 355,000 hectares, this park owes much of its success to Canadian primatologist Birut\u00e9 Galdikas. She arrived in Tanjung Puting in 1971, where she was able to study the primates <em>in situ<\/em> for several years. These giant monitor lizards, which can grow up two to three meters long, are not found anywhere else in the world.
