Explorers for our times<\/h3>\n

Is it possible to feel all alone in the world? To find a place where no traces of humankind are to be found? To leave civilisation behind and immerse yourself in the heart of an\u00a0<\/span>untamed wild and natural landscape?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>This dream of exploration can come true true on the coast of the Horn of Africa, courtesy of the\u00a0<\/span>Scattered Islands. Scattered, because they are dotted around\u00a0<\/span>Madagascar<\/strong>. These\u00a0<\/span>five<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>islands are spread out from the north-east to the south in the\u00a0<\/span>Mozambique, Channel and answer to the names of\u00a0<\/span>Europa<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(the most southerly),\u00a0<\/span>Bassas da India<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(its neighbour),\u00a0<\/span>Juan de Nova<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(more or less halfway between Madagascar and Mozambique), the\u00a0<\/span>Glorioso Islands<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(an archipelago to the north) and\u00a0<\/span>Tromelin<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>to the north-east.<\/p>\n

Considered tiny outposts of France, these islands were once the \u201cresidual territories of the French Republic\u201d and now form the 5th district of the deceptively named\u00a0<\/span>French Southern and Antarctic Lands<\/strong>\u2026 Their history is closely linked to France\u2019s maritime history and they are now recognised for the wealth of their exotic flora and fauna, hence their status as a\u00a0<\/span>nature reserve<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>since 1975.<\/p>\n

On the other side of the world<\/h3>\n

If you don\u2019t know your masked booby from your red-footed booby, all will be revealed with a visit to Europa Island. This\u00a0<\/span>rare species<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>of bird coexists here with flamingos, Arctic terns (even rarer) and wild goats. The\u00a0<\/span>coral reefs<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>which encircle each of these\u00a0<\/span>islands<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>provide a natural nursery for\u00a0<\/span>turtles<\/strong>. The spectacle of the young turtles hatching and running for the sea is a truly magical moment. The species that make these islets their home are\u00a0<\/span>rare<\/strong>, awe-inspiring and fragile. Their only human companions are the meteorologists stationed on Tromelin and Europa and a few gendarmes based on the Glorioso Islands.<\/p>\n

In this\u00a0<\/span>unspoilt corner<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>of the world, humankind is but an observer. The mangroves which shelter Europa have been there since the time of the\u00a0<\/span>first civilisations<\/strong>. The coconut groves on Juan de Nova are among the oldest in the world. Gaze upon one of the islands\u2019 beaches and let yourself be surrounded by a sense of the vastness of the universe. There\u2019s no better place to appreciate the insignificance of humankind on this planet.<\/p>\n

The Glorioso Archipelago<\/h3>\n

Discover the\u00a0<\/span>Glorioso Islands<\/strong>, an archipelago within an archipelago, which consists of Grande Glorieuse to the south and \u00cele du Lys\u2026 a true desert island. To be strictly accurate, the archipelago also includes two small islets which neighbour\u00a0<\/span>Grande Glorieuse<\/strong>, the aptly named Roches Vertes (Green Rocks) and \u00cele aux Crabes (Crab Island). Four parcels of land protected by a lagoon which dries up at low tide. Some of the mariners who visited the Indies during the 16th century were doubtless aware of the existence of these islands, however, their\u00a0<\/span>histories<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>did not begin until Hippolyte Caltaux came across them in 1879. He was the one who named these islands, in homage no doubt to the\u00a0<\/span>1830 revolution<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>which he wanted to honour in the faraway\u00a0<\/span>Indian Ocean<\/strong>. Copra from his coconut grove and guano from the \u00cele du Lys was then traded along the trading routes until 1907.<\/p>\n

Out of all these islands, it is the Gloriosos which are richest in history. It is a\u00a0<\/span>violent history<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>history indeed as they were once a hideout for\u00a0<\/span>pirates<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>attempting to evade the French navy \u2013 a journey to these parts will therefore be\u00a0<\/span>rich in both wildlife<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>and mythology. It will unveil the great history of French exploration and the glory of a past in which the unknown still existed.<\/p>\n
