From a meteorological standpoint, the\u00a0<\/span>wind\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>is the horizontal movement of air. To measure it, two parameters should be taken into account: the\u00a0<\/span>direction<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>speed<\/strong>. An anemometer is a device that enables the speed or pressure of the\u00a0<\/span>wind, to be measured, while a weather vane measures the\u00a0<\/span>direction of the wind<\/strong>. The speed is generally expressed in km\/h or m\/s and sailors express it in knots (1 knot = 1.852 km\/ h).<\/span><\/p>\n

Devised at the\u00a0<\/span>beginning of the 19th century<\/strong>\u00a0by Francis Beaufort, a British admiral, the\u00a0<\/span>Beaufort scale<\/strong>\u00a0gives an \u201cidea\u201d of the\u00a0<\/span>strength of the wind<\/strong>. Used by meteorologists and based on observations of the effects of wind at\u00a0<\/span>sea<\/a>\u00a0and on land, this scale has\u00a0<\/span>13 levels<\/strong>\u00a0or intervals numbered from 0 to 12. For example, 0 corresponds to a \u201ccalm glassy sea\u201d and 9 to a \u201cstrong gale\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

When we talk about\u00a0<\/span>speed<\/strong>, we have to take into account the variations linked to the change in time. Thus, we have to distinguish between three wind speeds: the\u00a0<\/span>\u201cinstantaneous\u201d wind<\/strong>\u00a0which is measured over a period of three seconds, the\u00a0<\/span>\u201cmean\u201d wind<\/strong>\u00a0which is an arithmetic mean over a period of 10 minutes and the\u00a0<\/span>\u201cmaximum\u201d wind<\/strong>\u00a0which is measured in the same way as the \u201cmean\u201d wind but which indicates the peak speeds reached by the gusts.<\/span><\/p>\n

On 3 May 1998, an incredibly powerful gust occurred in Bridge Creek (United States). Thanks to a Doppler radar which was able to capture the speed inside the tornado,\u00a0<\/span>wind<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>486 km\/hour<\/strong>\u00a0was recorded. This measurement has not been surpassed since! Before then, the record was held by Cyclone Olivia, in Barrow Island (Australia): 408 km\/h.<\/span><\/p>\n
