Dancing hats<\/strong><\/h3>\nAs our stopover in Sakata drew to a close, one last surprise awaited us. As we approached our quayside berth, my gaze was caught by a group of women dressed in brightly coloured kimonos. Having come to greet us, they broke into a traditional dance <\/strong>of the region known as Hanagasa Odori<\/em><\/strong>,<\/em> accompanied by an equally folkloric rhythm \u2013 the Hanagasa Ondo<\/em>, or \u201csong of the straw hat with flowers\u201d. A befitting reference to those worn by each of the dancers, adorned with benibana<\/em> or safflowers. Incidentally, I prefer the alternative name of \u201cdyer\u2019s saffron\u201d, as used in the past for tinting kimonos and cosmetics. Beating drums<\/strong><\/h3>\nFurther south, we set off to discover the wild landscapes of Sado Island<\/strong>; a small piece of land in the Sea of Japan, off the coast of Niigata. There, I fell under the spell of the quaint, peaceful town of Ogi<\/strong>with its harbour and traditional wooden houses. What\u2019s more, we werelucky enough to be able to attend a performance by the island\u2019s infamous and internationally renowned Kod\u014d troupe. Accompanied by a variety of traditional instruments, these exceptional artists played the taiko<\/em><\/strong> (giant Japanese drums), shaking both the earth and our souls. Sacred snows<\/strong><\/h3>\nWe continued our journey south to Toyama<\/strong> to reach the pure peaks of Mount Tateyama<\/strong>\u2026 As we left the shores of the Sea of Japan, I had no idea that our path would soon be culminating at an altitude of 2,450 metres, upon the volcanic plateau of Murod\u014d<\/strong>. I gradually surrendered to the grandiose landscapes<\/strong> and the hushed atmosphere surrounding me\u2026 When suddenly, there before us, lay a veritable corridor of snow<\/strong>! On either side of the path, immaculate white banks of 10 to 20 metres high reached tall beside us: the famous Yuki-no-Otani <\/strong>snow wall! Outstanding on stilts<\/strong><\/h3>\nIt was then time for a change of scenery, with the picturesque little town of Ine<\/strong>. This fishing village<\/strong>, with its old-world charm, is an architectural marvel: at the foot of the mountains rise some two hundred funaya<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 traditional \u201cboathouses\u201d built on stilts. The lowest storeys serves as storage for boats and fishing gear, offering direct access to the sea. Some even have a fishing net to store fresh fish for the family. We were lucky enough to visit four of them. Desert by the sea<\/strong><\/h3>\nThis trip never ceased to enchant and surprise me: after the snow of the Japanese Alps came the banks of the Tottori Sand Dunes<\/strong> \u2013 the largest dunes in the country. Imagine a sandy desert<\/strong>, stretching over 15 km from east to west and 2 km from north to south, running along the Sea of Japan. The Tottori Sand Dunes<\/strong> have long been a favourite backdrop for the famous photographer Sh\u014dji Ueda. Today, some of this sand is used as a raw material for monumental sculptures, exhibited at the aptly named Tottori Sand Museum<\/strong>. The subtle art of Hagi-yaki<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\nAt the south-western tip of the large Island of Honsh\u016b<\/strong> lies the medieval city of the samurai<\/strong>, Hagi<\/em><\/strong>; origin and home of Hagi-yaki<\/em> pottery. Derived from Korean ceramics, this pottery is closely linked with tea ceremonies: most of the objects made here are in fact intended for this art. Much like those on display in the Yoshika family workshop. I discovered a delicate, sober form of pottery, with few or no motifs, humble shapes, and natural colours that darken slightly on contact with hot infused water. Right next to the workshop is a museum, dedicated to the family\u2019s ceramic artist Taibi<\/strong> Yoshika<\/strong>. This ceremony is much more accessible and less codified than the Japanese version, and is practised by a number of Koreans. Stunning sakura<\/strong><\/h3>\nHere, it was time to stop for a moment, just long enough to share in the wonder created by the mesmerising sakura<\/em>, the cherry blossom trees that adorned our first ports of call. They generally bloom from March to May, depending on the region. In Japan, they are synonymous with spring and rebirth. For centuries, they have served as a reminder of the ephemeral nature of beauty and life. The sakura<\/em> are an emblem of mono no aware<\/em>, \u201cthe pathos of things\u201d or \u201csensitivity to ephemera\u201d \u2013 a typically Japanese aesthetic and spiritual concept. Celebrated during the traditional Hanami<\/em> Festivals, they are resplendent with their delicate flowers, which range in colour from white to deep red and every shade of pink in between. Earlier in the day, during our stopover in Mitarai<\/strong>, we had already had the opportunity to listen to a shamisen<\/em>, a type of lute with a long, thin neck and a square resonance box. I knew that this marked the end of a fantastic adventure<\/strong>, but I also had a feeling that it was only the beginning of an unconditional affection for this country and its people.
