Antarctica\u2019s hidden lakes: a watery world beneath the ice<\/h3>\n

Just as a whole world lies beneath our city streets, there is water under the Antarctic<\/strong> ice! To date, we have discovered about 400 subglacial lakes<\/strong> deep below the frozen continent. The most famous example is Lake Vostok<\/strong>, which lies under four kilometres of ice, is three times larger than Lake Ontario<\/strong> and extends to depths of 3,400 metres. Lake Whillans<\/strong>, on the other hand, is bursting with an incredible wealth of microbial life! But many more are still waiting to be discovered. In fact, there is a whole network of hidden lakes<\/strong> (some of them interconnected by rivers) that fill and empty thanks to phenomena that remain largely a mystery<\/strong> to us, but which have a definite effect on movement in the ice sheet<\/strong><\/a> and potentially influence ocean currents<\/strong> around the world as a result. The icy fires of an Antarctic volcano<\/h3>\n

In addition to lakes, Antarctica\u2019s frozen expanses are also home to many hidden volcanoes<\/strong>. In fact, it might even be the largest volcanic region in the world! 168 volcanoes <\/strong>that are either dormant, extinct or active are currently known to us, but it is thought that many more exist \u2013 perhaps even enough to rival the East African Rift<\/strong>! The subglacial eruptions of the active volcano on Deception Island, in the South Shetlands<\/strong> to the north of the Antarctic Peninsula<\/strong><\/a>, make it a particularly rare example of its kind. There is also the magnificent Mount Erebus<\/strong>, which ascends to heights of 3,794 metres on Ross Island<\/strong> and is the most active volcano on the continent. A lake of molten lava bubbles at the base of its crater.<\/p>\n

The Transantarctic Mountains: a vertiginous spine running through the pole<\/h3>\n

Antarctica is divided into eastern and western regions. Between the two runs a magnificent river of rock known as the Transantarctic Mountains<\/strong>. This system of mountain ridges interspersed with glaciers extends out over 3,200 km from Victoria Land to the Weddell Sea<\/a> and is one of the longest and oldest in the world<\/strong>. While the chain reaches its highest point at Mount Kirkpatrick<\/strong> at an altitude of 4,528 metres, it includes around 20 peaks that also exceed altitudes of 4,000 metres<\/strong>. This unique natural rock formation is extraordinarily rich in fossils, making it a palaeontologist\u2019s paradise<\/strong>. For example, it was here that fossilised<\/strong> prehistoric reptiles, amphibians and trees were uncovered in the Triassic-aged Fremouw Formation.<\/p>\n

The McMurdo Dry Valleys: the most mysterious of deserts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The McMurdo Dry Valleys<\/strong> in the Transantarctic Mountains are among the harshest environments on the planet<\/strong>. With its 15,000 km\u00b2 of unfrozen terrain, it is one of the most extreme deserts in the world<\/strong> and might even be drier than the Atacama<\/strong> Desert. This rocky, windswept landscape is millions of years old. Only a few plants nourished by summer meltwater survive there, accompanied by a few rare microorganisms. It is in the dry valleys of McMurdo, on the edges of the Taylor Glacier<\/strong>, that we can observe a naturally occurring phenomenon known as Blood Falls<\/strong>, created when iron-rich salt water surges out of cracks in the glacier to create an astonishing red colour.<\/p>\n

The world\u2019s fastest katabatic winds<\/h3>\n

Antarctica\u2019s katabatic winds<\/strong> are among the most powerful in the world, and they gather their speed by running through the continent\u2019s plateaux and mountains. They are the reason the McMurdo Valleys<\/strong> are so dry. These masses of cold air race down the crevassed faces of the mountains from their icy peaks, getting warmer and drier the further they descend and dissipating all water (liquid or solid) in their paths. The current record for the fastest wind was broken near the Dumont d\u2019Urville Station<\/strong> at Ad\u00e9lie Land<\/strong> (where altitudes can quickly rise to heights of 3,000 metres), with gusts blowing at nearly 320 kilometres per hour!<\/p>\n

Rocks from the heavens<\/strong><\/h3>\n

45,000<\/strong>: this was the number of meteorites<\/strong> found in Antarctica in 2022. In fact, in January 2023, a team of researchers found a rare specimen weighing 7.6\u00a0kg (most meteorites usually only weigh a handful of grams once they have passed through our atmosphere)! This makes Antarctica one of the world\u2019s favourite places for hunting space rocks<\/strong>. One of its great advantages is its vast and immaculate expanses of white space, which make it easier to spot the black rocks. Another is its dry climate, which guarantees their conservation. Add to this the way the ice drifts, concentrating the meteorites in a single area, and the movement of the glaciers<\/strong>, which helps to keep them at surface level. Its wealth of meteorites makes Antarctica an invaluable resource for gaining a better understanding of our solar system<\/strong> and our place in the universe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Le monde de l\u2019Antarctique se divise en deux, entre parties orientale et occidentale. Au sein de la cha\u00eene Transantarctique, les vall\u00e9es s\u00e8ches de McMurdo comptent parmi les zones les plus \u00e2pres du globe. Avec ses 15 000 km2<\/sup>\u00a0de terrain non gel\u00e9, c\u2019est l\u2019un des d\u00e9serts les plus extr\u00eames<\/strong>, peut-\u00eatre plus aride encore que le d\u00e9sert d\u2019Atacama. Une fois travers\u00e9 l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re, ils ne p\u00e8sent g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement qu\u2019une poign\u00e9e de grammes. De quoi faire du continent l\u2019un des terrains d\u2019exploration favoris des chasseurs d\u2019objets c\u00e9lestes. Ses avantages\u00a0? De vastes \u00e9tendues blanc immacul\u00e9 sur lesquelles se rep\u00e8rent ais\u00e9ment le noir de la roche. Son climat sec, qui en assure la pr\u00e9servation. Mais aussi la d\u00e9rive des glaces qui concentre les m\u00e9t\u00e9orites dans une m\u00eame zone, en m\u00eame temps que le mouvement des glaciers tend \u00e0 les maintenir \u00e0 la surface.
