But who was the first among Italian astronomer Galileo in 1620 and French philosopher and theologian Pierre Gassendi in 1649 to mention the \u201c<em>aurora borealis\u201d<\/em>? The question remains divisive. Nevertheless, it was at some point in the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century that these mysterious<strong> luminescent phenomena <\/strong>observed beyond the<strong> Arctic Circle<\/strong> became known as the \u201caurora borealis\u201d. The name comes from <strong>Aurora<\/strong>, ancient goddess of dawn, and her son <strong>Boreas<\/strong>, incarnation of the north wind. Like a gigantic dynamo, it is generated by the difference between our planet\u2019s speed of rotation and the complex movements of its outer core\u2019s fluids. Scientists refer to this <strong>intrinsic magnetic field <\/strong>that acts as a protective bubble as the \u201c<strong>Earth Shield<\/strong>\u201d. The region of space penetrated by the Earth\u2019s magnetic field is then referred to as the <strong>magnetosphere<\/strong>. It is a turbulent, highly dynamic region that is constantly evolving and that protects us against external aggressions such as <strong>cosmic rays <\/strong>and <strong>solar energetic particles.<\/strong> And it is precisely these interactions between the solar wind and Earth\u2019s magnetosphere that give rise to our <strong>polar auroras,<\/strong> also causing<strong> compass deviations.<\/strong><br>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=\u201dhttps:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/iStock-1477817772.jpg\u201d alt=\u201daurore bor\u00e9ale\u201d title_text=\u201daurores polaires\u201d align=\u201dcenter\u201d _builder_version=\u201d4.21.0\u2033 _module_preset=\u201ddefault\u201d global_colors_info=\u201d{}\u201d][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u201d4.21.0\u2033 _module_preset=\u201ddefault\u201d custom_padding=\u201d41px||31px|||\u201d global_colors_info=\u201d{}\u201d]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Extra-terrestrial polar auroras<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>polar aurora phenomenon <\/strong>is not exclusive to Earth. Other planets in our solar system are also venues for this fabulous celestial spectacle. The one necessary condition? Having a magnetic field. This phenomenon is considered a polar aurora when it <strong>occurs at one of the planet\u2019s magnetic poles<\/strong>. Several space probes have been able to testify, with images to prove it, to \u201cdancing lights\u201d on <strong>Uranus<\/strong>, <strong>Saturn<\/strong> and <strong>Jupiter<\/strong>, where the most spectacular polar auroras have been observed. They are <strong>100 times more intense<\/strong> than on Earth \u2014 and permanent! With its long distance from the Sun, Jupiter essentially owes its auroras to Io, its volcanic moon. More surprisingly, <strong>auroral lights<\/strong> have also been observed on <strong>Mars<\/strong>. While the Red Planet does not have a global magnetic field, some areas have remnants of a fossil magnetic field that causes the Martian auroras!<br>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=\u201dhttps:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/schema-EN-1.jpg\u201d alt=\u201daurora borealis\u201d title_text=\u201dpolar-aurora\u201d align=\u201dcenter\u201d _builder_version=\u201d4.21.0\u2033 _module_preset=\u201ddefault\u201d global_colors_info=\u201d{}\u201d][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u201d4.21.0\u2033 _module_preset=\u201ddefault\u201d custom_padding=\u201d41px||31px|||\u201d global_colors_info=\u201d{}\u201d]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Anna Boberg, \u201cArtist of the Arctic\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>That\u2019s how she liked to define herself. Born in Stockholm, <strong>Anna Boberg <\/strong>(1864-1935) briefly walked the halls of the Acad\u00e9mie Julian in Paris, where she studied painting and sculpture, before devoting herself to ceramics and glass arts. In 1901, she set out for Norway and the Lofoten Islands. Captivated by its beauty, the artist visited the archipelago for more than 30\u00a0years, in summer as well as in winter. She depicted colourful wooden houses and fishing boats, silent mountains and twilight scenes. Glaciers, the<strong> midnight sun and the aurora borealis <\/strong>were among her favourite subjects, as evidenced by her <em>Northern Lights, Study from North Norway<\/em>, where the aurora borealis becomes a wonderful and poetic celestial symphony.<br>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u201d4.21.0\u2033 _module_preset=\u201ddefault\u201d custom_padding=\u201d41px||31px|||\u201d global_colors_info=\u201d{}\u201d]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Path of the dead, fire foxes and ride of the Valkyries<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Privileged observers of the polar auroras, <strong>Scandinavian peoples <\/strong>developed many myths around these divine lights. For the <strong>Inuit<\/strong>, these <strong><em>arsaniit<\/em><\/strong> were the torches of fire held by their ancestors to guide the souls of the deceased along their last path. The <strong>Finns<\/strong> called them <strong><em>revontulet<\/em><\/strong>, or literally <em>\u201cfoxes of fire\u201d<\/em>. Twirling in the sky at high speeds, these Arctic foxes skimmed the peaks of snowy mountains with their shimmering tails, sprinkling the sky with flakes that reflected the light of the moon. For the Sami, the indigenous people of Lapland, these lights were birds of ill omen, incarnations of the souls of the dead. Moving, singing and whistling in their presence was avoided so as to not catch their attention. Finally, for the valiant <strong>Vikings<\/strong>, the Northern Lights were believed to reflect the <strong>armour of the Valkyries<\/strong>, fearsome warriors sent to Earth by Odin to enlist the best departed warriors and lead them to Valhalla to prepare for Ragnar\u00f6k, the end times battle that would result in the world\u2019s rebirth. In the heart of the most northern and southern areas of our planet, where the nights are\u2026 well, polar! Or <strong>almost never-ending.<\/strong> Of course, the task will be easier across the Arctic Circle, a region more accessible than Antarctica in winter. Regardless, to witness one of these fabulous eruptions of light, opt for the months of <strong>September to April<\/strong>. And to increase your chances even more, centre your auroral exploration around the winter solstice \u2013 December 21 \u2013 for the Northern Hemisphere, and the summer solstice \u2013 June 21 \u2013
