The Arctic<\/a><\/u> is an ocean of ice stretching over eight countries (Canada, the USA, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Russia). From the Inuit villages<\/strong> of Greenland<\/a><\/u> to the banks of Spitsbergen<\/a><\/u>, the volcanoes of Iceland<\/a><\/u> to the meanders of the North-West Passage and the boreal forests of Canada<\/a><\/u> \u2013 or even the North Pole<\/a><\/u><\/strong> itself, Arctic explorers\u2019 holy grail \u2013 travelling the Arctic strips us of all superfluities, leaving only what is essential. Those essentials are ice<\/strong>, wind<\/strong> and life<\/strong>. To travel the Arctic is to go on an epic adventure in which humans and the wild tame one another.<\/p>\n

Arctic landscapes: volcanoes, fjords, tundra and pack ice<\/h2>\n

Unlike the endless white of the Antarctic<\/a><\/u>, the Arctic<\/strong> eschews uniformity. Icelandic black basalt<\/strong> follows the fawn colours of northern Canada<\/strong>\u2019s tundra<\/strong>, while in Greenland<\/strong>, icebergs<\/strong> break away from glaciers<\/strong> to make their way across Disko Bay<\/strong>. In Spitsbergen<\/strong>, jagged peaks and deep fjords shelter an extraordinary wealth<\/strong> of wildlife.
