After his first cruise aboard the Lyrial<\/em> in September 2022, Renaud Capu\u00e7on<\/strong> will set sail once more in December 2024 to celebrate Christmas<\/strong> aboard the advanced polar exploration ship Le<\/em> Commandant Charcot <\/em>during an unprecedented trip to the Far North<\/a> in mid-winter. A musician\u2019s destiny<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In life, some doors are more important to open than others. When, a four-year-old Renaud Capu\u00e7on <\/strong>opened the door to the conservatory in Chamb\u00e9ry, his hometown, with his parents, he couldn\u2019t yet imagine how much it would change his life. \u201cI\u2019d advise him to choose the violin; he has a good ear\u201d<\/em>, the teacher in charge of children\u2019s music education said that day. And that was it. \u201cI didn\u2019t have a revelation; listening to a disc didn\u2019t make me cry. Ultimately, it was something very organic and simple that changed my destiny.\u201d<\/em> But one thing is certain: \u201cMusic would have been part of my life in one way or another.\u201d <\/em>Renaud Capu\u00e7on is now one of the most sought-after solo violinists on the international scene<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Before becoming a big name, he practised his scales at the Conservatoire National Sup\u00e9rieur de Musique de Paris<\/strong>, where he began studying at the age of 14. He won numerous awards and made important connections during his five years there, including with Italian conductor Carlo Maria Giulini, whose leadership he followed from age 15 as part of the European Union Youth Orchestra. \u201cThere was something very spiritual about him,\u201d<\/em> recalls Renaud Capu\u00e7on. He then moved to Berlin, where he refined his bowing alongside Thomas Brandis and Isaac Stern before becoming, at age 21, the concertmaster of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester<\/strong> under the prestigious baton of conductor Claudio Abbado. Finally, he played with Martha Argerich, \u201ca prodigious pianist\u201d. <\/em>These precious connections shaped Capu\u00e7on\u2019s art as an artist as much as his philosophy as a man.<\/p>\n

Sharing passion<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cThere is nothing better than seeing young musicians develop their art and settle into it. I learned from my elders and want to pass on what I\u2019ve learnt. It\u2019s a wonderful cycle.\u201d<\/em> Working for hours and hours to indulge a selfish pleasure makes no sense to him. He plays to give<\/strong>. To fully experience the shared moments of an encounter or a concert. In front of his students at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne, where he has been teaching since 2014. Through the three festivals he directs: the Rencontres Musicales d\u2019Evian, the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad and the Festival de P\u00e2ques d\u2019Aix-en-Provence, which he created in 2013. Or with the baton of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, which he has been conducting for four years now. \u201cI could use twelve-day weeks!\u201d<\/em>, says the hyperactive virtuoso with enthusiasm.<\/p>\n

Experience or the art of permanent doubt<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Although the passion of his twenties has mellowed, his experience makes it all the more intense. \u201cThe day I tell you I have finished learning\u201d,<\/em> warns Renaud Capu\u00e7on, \u201cis the day I need to think about putting my violin away and changing professions<\/em>.\u201d He is deeply convinced that \u201cthere is always something more to learn!\u201d<\/strong><\/em> He could put the same Brahms or Schubert score on his stand 200 times but would offer a different interpretation every time. \u201cAll this matures and evolves over time. Like a fine wine.\u201d<\/em> Of course, \u201cI have much more maturity and experience than when I was 20 years old, but the older I get, the less things seem fixed\u201d.<\/em>\u00a0Renaud Capu\u00e7on draws his freedom from his doubts, seeing certainty as the sign of an impoverished artist at the end of the road. \u201cI\u2019m proud that I am increasingly doubtful. Doubting means being free<\/strong>. It makes me stronger.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2026 that Renaud Capu\u00e7on never tires of exploring. \u201cI\u2019m 47 years old. I\u2019ve been travelling for 20 years\u201d<\/em>: 20 years of wandering around the world. 20 years of musical exploration with his violin<\/strong>, a Guarneri del Ges\u00f9<\/strong>, two centuries older than him, dating back to 1737! 20 years in search of the absolute. The ideal sound. He knows and readily accepts it is a lost cause. \u201cLooking for your sound is looking for yourself. But you never really find yourself completely. You find yourself; you lose yourself, and then you find yourself again\u2026<\/em> All of this is very subjective, of course, but this is how I perceive my life as an artist\u201d<\/em>, he says. And so in 2022, when he set sail with PONANT<\/strong> on board the Lyrial<\/em> for a musical cruise<\/strong><\/a>, Renaud Capu\u00e7on and his violin set off in this \u201cworld without end\u201d to discover new lands, driven by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. The benefits of letting go<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This musical cruise was a huge challenge for this man from the mountains with untested sea legs. But Renaud Capu\u00e7on<\/strong>\u2019s fears were quickly swept away. \u201cI immediately felt comfortable and safe.
