Beluga watching<\/h3>\n

In summer<\/strong>, a community of belugas<\/strong> appears in the mouth of the St. Lawrence between Tadoussac<\/a><\/u> and Saguenay<\/a><\/u>. Local naturalists and Benjamin Dy estimate that 800 or so whales come here from their more usual home of the Arctic Ocean, the reason being their ancient roots<\/strong> in the area. The current population\u2019s ancestors lived here after the last Ice Age, about 7,000 years ago. The river is the only place where the whales<\/strong> are observed at such a southerly latitude.<\/p>\n

Follow the paths of sea mammals<\/h3>\n

\u201cThe cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Laurentian Channel attract sea mammals<\/em>,\u201d explains Benjamin Dy. From blue to humpback whales via common rorquals, the Gulf of St. Lawrence<\/strong> offers plenty of opportunities to spot majestic wildlife<\/strong>. All kinds of Arctic species<\/strong> are drawn to a region that caters well for them over the winter, especially in terms of temperature and access from Labrador. Harp seals<\/strong>, for example, stay there from autumn to spring to breed. The Canadian government records between 30,000 and 50,000 births every year in the Gulf\u2019s southern portion.<\/p>\n

The majestic inhabitants<\/strong> of Newfoundland<\/a><\/u>\u2019s forests take advantage of the region\u2019s Indian summer<\/strong> to perform very precise mating rituals<\/strong>. You can spot herds of boreal woodland caribou<\/strong> as soon as you enter Gros Morne National Park<\/strong>, as every male has his own harem. Moose are more likely to shy away, but you can still hear them over great distances. Their characteristic bellows ring out during rutting season in autumn, and sometimes you can see individuals at the forest\u2019s edge.<\/p>\n
