Local naturalists and Benjamin Dy estimate that 800 or so whales come here from their more usual home of the Arctic Ocean, the reason being their <strong>ancient roots<\/strong> in the area. The current population\u2019s ancestors lived here after the last Ice Age, about 7,000 years ago. From blue to humpback whales via common rorquals, the <strong>Gulf of St. Lawrence<\/strong> offers plenty of opportunities to spot <strong>majestic wildlife<\/strong>. <strong>All kinds of Arctic species<\/strong> are drawn to a region that caters well for them over the winter, especially in terms of temperature and access from Labrador. <strong>Harp seals<\/strong>, for example, stay there from autumn to spring to breed.
