The Way of Tea<\/h3>\n

Just as only enlightened palates can truly appreciate the original taste of the matcha \u2013 the\u00a0<\/span>Japanese green tea<\/b>\u00a0made by grinding the dried leaves into a powder \u2013 only highly attentive souls will appreciate the Zen elegance of\u00a0<\/span>the tea ceremony.<\/b>\u00a0What could be interpreted as austerity or simplicity is, in the\u00a0<\/span>Land of the Rising Sun,<\/a>\u00a0an art of living, a principle of satisfaction and humility combined, sometimes taken to the extreme.\u00a0<\/span>Sad\u014d<\/b>, literally the \u201cWay of Tea\u201d, is a valuable illustration of this.<\/span><\/p>\n

Objective: Zen<\/h3>\n

From the meticulous actions repeated many times by the host to the sometimes priceless utensils, not forgetting the way the settings are decorated, the ceremony is ritualised and precise, providing a small-scale illustration of Japanese etiquette and the serenity of \u201clittle everyday things\u201d. So it is no coincidence that you will find yourself sitting in a traditional posture on tatami mats, surrounded by finely decorated Japanese screens and a landscaped\u00a0<\/span>Zen garden<\/b>\u00a0visible in the distance through a window. Just like it\u2019s no coincidence that your host enters after you, wearing a kimono, and places in front of you the tools that are the key to a successful ceremony: the\u00a0<\/span>chawan<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(tea bowl), the\u00a0<\/span>natsume<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(tea caddy, usually lacquered), the\u00a0<\/span>chashaku<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(scoop for transferring the tea from the\u00a0<\/span>natsume<\/i>\u00a0to the\u00a0<\/span>chawan<\/i>), the\u00a0<\/span>hishaku<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(bamboo ladle used to transfer water from one container to another), the\u00a0<\/span>chasen<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(bamboo whisk) and finally the\u00a0<\/span>chakin<\/i><\/b>, cloth used to clean the objects for each step. Serious but never grave, the ceremony is like a calm iterative ballet, with natural meditative sounds that would make ASMR fans green with envy, a call to relaxation and revitalisation, a zen invitation for the guest to enjoy \u2013 traditionally in three mouthfuls \u2013 a\u00a0<\/span>matcha tea<\/b>\u00a0with a subtle and sublime taste.<\/span><\/p>\n

Imported from China during the 9th century, tea achieved recognition in Japan thanks to exceptional ingredients and the contribution of\u00a0<\/span>Sen no Riky\u016b<\/b>, a tea master who codified the principles of Sad\u014d in the 16th century. Since then, despite a few variations depending on the school, the traditional ceremony remains more or less the same, with one constant: giving the guest a taste of this refined and unique\u00a0<\/span>Japanese art of living<\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
