It is where\u00a0<\/span><b>decommissioned spacecraft<\/b><span>\u00a0go to die. For example, when the Russian space station, Mir, was decommissioned,\u00a0<b>the oceanic pole of inaccessibility<\/b>\u00a0was chosen as the spot for it to crash land<\/span><span>\u00a0to ensure the debris generated by its re-entry into the Earth\u2019s atmosphere didn\u2019t cause damage on land.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As a result, a\u00a0<\/span><b>veritable spacecraft cemetery<\/b><span>\u00a0has been created over the years<\/span><b><span>\u00a0<\/span>around Point Nemo<\/b><span>. NASA favours it for the final resting place of the International Space Station, which must be dismantled or reconfigured in 2024. In\u00a0<\/span><b>Jules Verne\u2019s novel<\/b><span>, he is described as antisocial, shunning the company of other people by roaming the oceans in his submarine, the\u00a0<\/span><i><span>Nautilus<\/span><\/i><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The idea of such a remote place in the ocean<\/span><span>\u00a0has since enjoyed great success as a literary trope. American science fiction author H. P. Lovecraft chose a site in the South Pacific close to the oceanic pole of inaccessibility for the fictional isolated city of R\u2019Lyeh, where the malevolent cosmic entity Cthulhu was imprisoned. More recently, the virtual band\u00a0<\/span><b>Gorillaz<\/b><span>, created by British musician Damon Albarn, released\u00a0<\/span><b><i>Plastic Beach<\/i><\/b><span>, an album based on a continent located at the same latitude and longitude as Point Nemo<\/span><span>.
