The word <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cKanak\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> comes from the Hawaiian word <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201ckanaka\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, meaning <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cperson\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201chuman being\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, or <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cfree person\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Kanak<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> came from Borneo and the Philippines in 1500 BC and now make up <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the majority of people in the Northern province<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (72.2%) of Grande-Terre, the archipelago\u2019s main island, and in Lifou, Mar\u00e9 and Ouv\u00e9a in the Loyalty Islands Province (94.6%). Despite the modernisation of society, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">traditional Kanak culture<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is still very present and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">highly respected in New Caledonia<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. They are a passport to understanding Kanak culture. \u201cCustoms\u201d mean all the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unwritten rules governing the social balance of indigenous New Caledonians<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, genuine \u201ccustomary laws\u201d parallel to French law. These rules punctuate the stages of life (birth, marriage, mourning, alliances, harvests, etc.), define duties and obligations towards the community and dictate each person\u2019s place, respect for the elders and connection to the land and the sacred.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The entire Kanak society<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is structured around this <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sacred land<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, with the clan at its core. And at its head, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the Grand Chef <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Great Chief) is responsible for upholding traditional customs.
