The Kanak <\/span><\/b>are an indigenous Melanesian population located on a few islands <\/span>in New Caledonia<\/span><\/b>, to the east of Australia in the South Pacific. The word <\/span>\u201cKanak\u201d<\/span><\/b> comes from the Hawaiian word <\/span>\u201ckanaka\u201d<\/span><\/i>, meaning <\/span>\u201cperson\u201d<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>\u201chuman being\u201d<\/span><\/b>, or <\/span>\u201cfree person\u201d<\/span><\/b>. <\/span>The Kanak<\/span><\/b> came from Borneo and the Philippines in 1500 BC and now make up <\/span>the majority of people in the Northern province<\/span><\/b> (72.2%) of Grande-Terre, the archipelago\u2019s main island, and in Lifou, Mar\u00e9 and Ouv\u00e9a in the Loyalty Islands Province (94.6%). Despite the modernisation of society, <\/span>traditional Kanak culture<\/span><\/b> is still very present and <\/span>highly respected in New Caledonia<\/span><\/b>. It is a <\/span>plural culture<\/span><\/b> for a \u201cone and indivisible\u201d people who speak 28 different languages and are split into 330 chiefdoms.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Faced with the essential challenge of preserving ecosystems, <\/span>New Caledonia<\/span><\/b> is playing a leading role in the Pacific region, driven by a <\/span>mixed population that is highly concerned with protecting its land and ocean<\/span><\/b>. Omnipresent and legally binding for the Kanak, <\/span>customs<\/span><\/b> are the <\/span>foundation of the Melanesian social bond<\/span><\/b>. They are a passport to understanding Kanak culture. \u201cCustoms\u201d mean all the <\/span>unwritten rules governing the social balance of indigenous New Caledonians<\/span><\/b>, genuine \u201ccustomary laws\u201d parallel to French law. These rules punctuate the stages of life (birth, marriage, mourning, alliances, harvests, etc.), define duties and obligations towards the community and dictate each person\u2019s place, respect for the elders and connection to the land and the sacred.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> \u00a0<\/span>The entire Kanak society<\/span><\/b> is structured around this <\/span>sacred land<\/span><\/b>, with the clan at its core. And at its head, <\/span>the Grand Chef <\/span><\/b>(Great Chief) is responsible for upholding traditional customs. At the heart of each clan is <\/span>the Kanak Grande Case<\/span><\/b>, \u201cthe social centre of the tribe\u201d, equivalent to the M\u0101ori <\/span>wharenui.<\/span><\/i> Once the Grand Chef\u2019s home, it is now used for gatherings, discussions and meetings.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This involves <\/span>the clan chief and their guest giving each other reciprocal offerings<\/span><\/b>. You must introduce yourself with a symbolic present wrapped in a small piece of cloth (<\/span>manou<\/span><\/i>) as a sign of respect and humility. For example, you can give them a few CFP francs, a packet of rice or tobacco. This<\/span> traditional dish <\/span><\/b>is a type of meat or fish stew involving vegetables such as taro, sweet potato, plantain, tomato\u2026 and yams. These ingredients are covered with boiling coconut milk, wrapped in a large banana leaf and patiently stewed in a hot stone oven.
