Following yet another argument, Fionn, the Irishman, decided to confront his rival face-to-face. He built\u00a0<\/span><strong>a bridge out of stone columns<\/strong><span>\u00a0so Benandonner could reach Ireland without getting his feet wet. When Fionn\u2019s wife saw this enormous giant crossing the bridge, she was very worried and so disguised her husband as a baby to hide him. When he saw the \u2018baby\u2019, Benandonner took fright, thinking that its father must be truly ginormous, and fled back to\u00a0<\/span><u><a href=\"https:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/en\/most-beautiful-natural-swimming-pools\/\">Scotland<\/a><\/u><span>, destroying part of the causeway behind him. The Irish are particularly fond of these legends, which they are brought up on from a very young age.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">A complicated geological phenomenon<\/h2>\n<p>We must look to<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>geology<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>for a more rational explanation of these stone blocks. It all started with a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>magma flow<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>during the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Cenozoic era<\/strong>, some 66 million years ago. Cooling very quickly, the lava solidified and turned into<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>igneous rock: basalt<\/strong>. The site lies on the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Antrim Plateau<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>which was created by layers of lava flows: a<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>trapp<\/strong>. The<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>change in temperature<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>then fragmented the basalt into columns, first vertically, then horizontally. Finally,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>marine erosion<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>took care of smoothing the surface, so creating a true geometric plateau. Suite \u00e0 une \u00e9ni\u00e8me dispute, Fionn l\u2019Irlandais d\u00e9cida de se mesurer \u00e0 son comp\u00e8re en face \u00e0 face. Il construisit <strong>un pont fait de colonnes de pierre<\/strong>, pour rejoindre l\u2019Irlande sans se mouiller les pieds. En voyant un tr\u00e8s grand g\u00e9ant emprunter le pont, la femme de Fionn, prise d\u2019inqui\u00e9tude, d\u00e9guisa son mari en b\u00e9b\u00e9 pour le dissimuler. Benandonner prit alors peur en imaginant la taille que pouvait mesurer le p\u00e8re de l\u2019enfant, et repartit en <a href=\"https:\/\/escales.ponant.com\/plus-belles-piscines-naturelles\/\">\u00c9cosse<\/a>, d\u00e9truisant derri\u00e8re lui une partie de la chauss\u00e9e. Les Irlandais affectionnent tout particuli\u00e8rement ces l\u00e9gendes, qui les bercent depuis leur plus tendre enfance.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne g\u00e9ologique complexe<\/h3>\r\n<p>Pour trouver une explication plus rationnelle \u00e0 ces blocs de pierre, il faut se tourner du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la <strong>g\u00e9ologie<\/strong>. Tout part d\u2019une <strong>coul\u00e9e de magma<\/strong>, \u00e0 l\u2019<strong>\u00e8re c\u00e9nozo\u00efque<\/strong>, il y a quelque 66 millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es. En refroidissant tr\u00e8s rapidement, la lave se fige et se transforme en <strong>roche magmatique : le basalte<\/strong>. Le <strong>plateau d\u2019Antrim<\/strong>, sur lequel est situ\u00e9 le site, consiste en fait en une superposition de coul\u00e9es de lave : un <strong>trapp<\/strong>. La <strong>modification thermique<\/strong> a ensuite fragment\u00e9 le basalte en colonnes, d\u2019abord verticalement, puis horizontalement. L\u2019<strong>\u00e9rosion marine<\/strong> s\u2019est enfin charg\u00e9e d\u2019aplanir la surface, cr\u00e9ant ainsi un v\u00e9ritable plateau g\u00e9om\u00e9trique.
