Die Polarregionen ver\u00e4ndern sich schneller, als wir sie begreifen k\u00f6nnen. In diesem Kontext ist die Erforschung der Arktis und Antarktis nicht nur eine wissenschaftliche, sondern auch eine logistische Herausforderung \u2013 und die Le Commandant Charcot<\/em>, PONANTs Schiff f\u00fcr Expeditionen ins Eis, \u00f6ffnet T\u00fcren, die bislang verschlossen blieben.<\/p>\n

In den hohen Breitengraden sp\u00fcrt man schon, was sich anderswo erst ank\u00fcndigt: Kein Ort auf der Erde reagiert empfindlicher auf den Klimawandel als die Polarregionen \u2013 und kein Ort gibt der Wissenschaft fr\u00fcher Auskunft dar\u00fcber, was kommt.<\/p>\n

Camille Lique, Forscherin, Ozeanographin und Physikerin an LOPS und Ifremer*, war w\u00e4hrend der ersten Nordpol-Expedition der Le Commandant Charcot <\/em>an Bord. Ihr Fazit: \u201eDie Natur ver\u00e4ndert sich, w\u00e4hrend wir sie untersuchen. Polargebiete verstehen und sch\u00fctzen: eine gemeinsame Mission<\/h3>\n

Abgeschiedenheit, K\u00e4lte, Packeis und St\u00fcrme \u2013 die Polarregionen stellen jeden, der dort forschen will, vor au\u00dfergew\u00f6hnliche Herausforderungen. Die n\u00f6tige Infrastruktur wurde \u00fcber Jahrzehnte aufgebaut: Zwischen 1957 und 1959, zur Zeit der Unterzeichnung des Antarktisvertrags, entstanden in Arktis und Antarktis zahlreiche Forschungsstationen. Frankreich errichtete 1956 die Station Dumont D\u2019Urville im Ad\u00e9lieland in der Antarktis und leitet gemeinsam mit italienischen Teams die Kontinentalstation Dome C. In Spitzbergen in der Arktis ist die franz\u00f6sische Station Teil der internationalen Basis von Ny-\u00c5lesund. Weil polare Missionen immense Kosten mit sich bringen, schlie\u00dfen sich Forschungseinrichtungen weltweit zusammen. Die arktische MOSAIC-Expedition 2020, die auf dem deutschen Eisbrecher Polarstern stattfand, bestand aus Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aus 15 L\u00e4ndern.<\/p>\n

Le Commandant Charcot<\/em>, eine einzigartige Beobachtungsstation<\/h3>\n

Was kein Satellitenbild und kein Labormodell ersetzen kann: das direkte Arbeiten im Feld. Wer die Arktis oder Antarktis aus der N\u00e4he erlebt, versteht Zusammenh\u00e4nge, die sich aus der Ferne nicht erschlie\u00dfen. Forschungseisbrecher sind selten \u2013 in der Antarktis weichen Wissenschaftler daher oft auf Fischerei-, Handels- oder Tourismusschiffe aus, die improvisiert zur Forschungsplattform werden. Die Le Commandant Charcot <\/em>ist eine andere Antwort. Nicolas Kolodziejczyk, Forscher am LOPS der Universit\u00e4t Brest, bringt es auf den Punkt: \u201eDie<\/em> Le Commandant Charcot bietet die M\u00f6glichkeit, routinem\u00e4\u00dfige Messungen durchzuf\u00fchren und Instrumente einzusetzen, deren gesammelte Daten f\u00fcr die Beobachtungsnetzwerke von gro\u00dfem Wert sind. Dieses Schiff deckt Regionen ab, aus denen wir wenige Proben bekommen, sodass jede neue Datenerhebung \u00e4u\u00dferst wertvoll ist.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Die Begleitung der Wissenschaftler ist kein nachtr\u00e4glicher Einfall, vielmehr wurde dies von Beginn an bei der Konzeption des Schiffes mitgedacht. \u00a0An Bord steht den Forschenden ein Laborraum mit direktem Zugang zum Meer zur Verf\u00fcgung \u2013 f\u00fcr den Einsatz von meteorologischen Bojen, Temperatur-Salzgehalt-Sensoren und weiteren Probenahme-Instrumenten. Mikroskope, Probenahmepumpen und wissenschaftliche Grundausstattung geh\u00f6ren dazu; ein Wissenschaftskoordinator begleitet die Expeditionen.<\/p>\n
